Engine mods on an n/a motor typically don't really make sense in terms of cost to power ratio. iirc, there was a user on here that did a dyno run before and after installing a TRD CAI. Per the dyno results, there was a 5hp/19tq gain in the upper rpm ranges.
like borfoo3 said, you need the tune, exhaust, intake and what not to really feel the difference.

Uhhh... no. Even aside from the typically inflated gains people report from CAIs and such, a gain of 5 hp and 19 lb-ft in the upper RPM ranges is not mathematically possible. HP = torque x RPM ÷ 5,252. At 5,252 RPM, torque and HP are equal, and a 5 hp increase would equal a 5 lb-ft increase.

IDK, maybe living at altitude it makes a bigger impact for me. Heck I would like more air as well sometimes!

Same, I have the URD MAF as well, but I noticed an immediate bump in pep even without it. I was chirping tire after installing the intake and exhaust lol

I spent weeks researching this exact question. I looked and found dyno charts for every item i installed. I have a spectre cold air intake with an afe throttle body spacer(the thicker one), mbrp 2.5" exhaust and the sprint booster. I installed everything at different times to compare. here is my thoughts.
sprint booster, i wouldnt drive without it, it made it more fun to drive and lively.
the cold air intake and spacer were put on at the same time and the very next morning i noticed i was pulling the same hills in 5 converter locked that i was downshifting on before. It also comes to life around 3900 rpm and sounds like godzilla having an orgasm
the last piece was the exhaust, i got a great deal on the mbrp 2.5". It has a good sound, very quiet at idle but due to having a turn down over the axle for clearance and it resonating off the ground it is very bareable. it gives it a deep tone but when passing it gives you that v6 tone... but when passing all you can hear is the godzilla anyway
All in all every chart i found and all the research i did. top end power did not increase but maybe 2/3 hp. but i can tell you for a fact that lower and mid range this this has a bunch more torque and this things are made for that not high rpm. I also am running the stock tires still and averaging 19.5/20.5(combined) every fill up running 89. once my lift and 33s are put on i am of course expecting it to drop a couple points of course.
conclusion, do what makes you happy. I cant tell you i have wheeled with guys that had different exhausts than me and mine has sounded the best. i wheeled with a guy running a magnuson and it screamed more than whined... but i would not change my engine mods and have been happy with the performance.

Hey,
Sorry to Zombie this thread, but it says the Spectre intake and spacer is illegal in California. Is it a noise issue? Emmisions?
I'm looking to slightly boost the low end torque on my 4R specifically so it stops down shifting from 5 to 4 on slight inclines. If you realllllllly granny drive it, you can get decent mileage, but thats the side benefit of a bit more power. The engine doesn't have to shift down. And when you need some grunt, its there. Especially if you boost the power naturally aspirated. I know the limitations of a 5700lb truck, but its sort of a hobby of mine to squeeze mileage out of cars that shouldn't get it.
how has it been since you made this upgrade? Reliability? Engine note? Filter issues etc.
Thanks.

The 1GR has a charcoal filter just after the panel filter. The purpose is to stop any gas fumes from leaving the intake manifold and escaping into the atmosphere. Generally all aftermarket intakes delete it which is deleting an emissions part making it illegal.

I installed an AFE filter and removed the charcoal after filter. (I know I'm a bad boy). I didn't notice any difference in power. I installed a Borla muffler and it made a definite difference. Maybe it allowed the AFE to move more air in because more exhaust was getting out? I dunno but getting on the parkway and passing there is a definite increase in power and smoothness in acceleration. It's more than a "butt dyno" effect. My wife can feel it too. After installing a Sprint Booster the drivability of the 4Runner is so much more pleasant now. Is it a race car? Of course not but that's not what these vehicles are for. It now has decent passing power and the throttle response is like it should be, kinda like there's a cable to the throttle body and it actually responds right away.

Last i checked 5th gen 4runners are ~4400-4800 lbs curb weight. You could however be carrying an extra 1000 lbs or so and be within GVWR.
There isn't a lot of performance, tuning, dyno, et cetera information for 4Runners relative to certain other vehicles or Off-Road/Suspension/OV.
At the end of the day, and very much over simplified, with breathing mods if you can move more air mass in and out of the engine and alter the fuel and timing to make use of that air, you can make more power.
So, with proper tuning, breathing mods will change your engine's power curve. How much, and where, is dependent on tuning and characteristics of the mods.
If your 4runner is 2020+, tuning isn't yet an option.
As always, aftermarket parts always carry some amount and type of risk simply from not being the same part that the OE spent millions of dollars and thousands of hours validating. Additionally, by changing said part, you have changed the system, sub-system, assembly, etc.. and therefore potentially the interaction between parts or systems. However, in some cases, the aftermarket part proves to be a solution or even more robust than factory.

There’s tons of things you can do that SUPPORT making more power, without actually making more power.

Installing my Borla was a noticeable improvement as well, I actually chirped tire a few times after the install because I wasn't expecting the truck to be so responsive. Definitely not a racecar, but my Borla cat back was definitely one of my favorite and most satisfying mods that I've installed

Which setup did you get, and does it drone?

I have the Borla touring on mine and an AFE intake. Both were noticeable gains but not earth shattering. Very very slight mileage improvement. The Borla does drone a little after 2500 RPM or so. A long highway trip retrieving parts for my Mustang project going 85-90 for six hours had me kinda wishing I had kept the stock exhaust. But that was the only time. Probably should have just slowed down!
