Need advice on roof rack
I'm looking for a roof rack that can serve its purpose to hold a RTT but also other gear/cargo as well. Not just recovery boards and fuel cans but the other types of gear/cargo (duffle bags, large coolers, water bottle cases, boxes, anything with different shapes and weights). Basically a basket/rtt carrier. Something I can throw shit on top and secure it via straps or netting with some sort of mesh flooring on the bottom to hold said cargo.
Gobi looks to be the best option because it serves it purpose as a basket but can also support a RTT with the cross bars. Baja can't really do this with their basket system with mesh flooring because you can't really fit their crossbars, and if you mount crossbars on the uneven bajarack up top I don't think it can support the loads for the RTT. Gobi is also expensive and the long production times.....
The only other rack I've seen that can serve this purpose that is cheaper and on the modular side is maybe a prinsu. However prinsu has gaps between the cross bars which means any small cargo can't really be laid flat or will slip under the rack. The only solution to this is you have to pay for load out panels in between each crossbar so you can put cargo on top but you still don't have sidewall protection from shifting... some sort of mesh or flat flooring is needed in between each crossbar gap... (I see you can pay for a cargo basket load out but its only protecting one half of the area you put cargo in), if properly secured not a big deal but in the event something goes wrong its a crappy situation. Front runner is another option that has perimeter protection but I have a sunroof and I can use a prinsu to be more modular when I like to.
It seems like the problem I have looking at modular systems is it only useful for RTT and holding gear like recovery boards and what not, strapping a couch or laying cargo on it seems a little sketchy.
I want to make sure there isn't any other options for a basket/RTT type before deciding to make the expensive and time consuming plunge with Gobi.
Thanks!
