Yeah... I'm not understanding the BMW engine either. Not if reliability and serviceability are their primary goals. I guess the next announcement will be about how they're patterning all of the electronics from an 80's vintage Jaguar.

I would not. I would pick something popular, reliable, and readily serviceable in remote areas. I am not a Toyota fanboy, but seems like a Land Cruiser engine would have been a much better choice for this application.
Turbos are not the deciding factor for me. The new BMW we picked up this week is a twin-turbo.

The Landcruiser is available with a Turbodiesel in most other markets. If those Landcruisers were available here, I'd own one.

I owned a fleet of class 6-8 trucks in a past business. All turbocharged. No issues with the Turbos.

In my past career as a Master Tech, a Turbo was rarely a cause of problems by itself.

Interesting. I was looking into the actual company, and the likelihood of the vehicle coming to the US. Everything I find points to it not being likely.

That said, you could be THE employee here in the US: INEOS Grenadier Careers: Job Opportunities With A World-Class Team

Going to be a hard road, to be honest.

I understand that, but a N/A motor is 1 less problem, especially for such a vehicle.

Diesels benefit sufficiently to have a turbo, moreso than gasoline.

I would not pick a high-performance BMW sports car engine, as beautiful as they are for road cars.

Which available engine would have been your choice?

ETA: And yes, I would own one of those Landcruisers too.

2 1/2 years later. Looks like they have not folded yet and are coming to the US this year.

Huge difference between class 6-8 turbo diesels and a downsized turbo charged gas engine that is worked hard to match larger displacement engines.

I thought about getting rid of mine, but I made my mind up I’m going to keep it since it’s paid for. I’m going to order a 4 door bronco with the 35’s and hard top. I’m going with o wait until the end of the year because the car market is about to crash.

If I was going to go that route I think I would prefer to restore a Defender. If you have the cash you can get a Himalayan HIMALAYA | The premier Land Rover restoration and modification specialist.. I got to sit in a Sand Duster. Superb workmanship. But at 200k it was a bit too rich for my blood.. One nice thing about the older defenders is engine wise they are very basic. No computers.

Huge difference in duty cycle, too.
