Roadforce Balancing

Dropped my wife off at the surgeon to get her implants. While she was getting that done, I took her 4Runner in to get the tires road force balanced. Two of the tires were way off, and a third was showing signs of the belts starting to separate. She had punctured a tire while off-roading last summer and we installed two new Cooper ATs and kept the good one from that axle as the spare. We’ll use that spare to replace the one with belts separating. Hopefully this will clean up the steering pulse.

She’s getting a couple dental implants, in case any of you were thinking of something else!

Ahh but We’ve been hanging at our ranch in Stevensville, Montana since early March. I’ve been working from home (Federal Reserve). This is our future retirement location, though my wife is already retired. It is spectacularly beautiful up here.

Looks like for dental implants she only gets her wheels balanced. If she had the "good" implants, you would have to do way better, maybe a new T4 Pro.

223k on your 2014 good stuff. I just hit 200k on my 2012. It will go to my son who turns driving age soon. Not sure if I'll pick up another runner, a tundra, a used landcruiser, or one of those fancy looking sequoia trds.

Well it was a process of elimination. Also keep in mind that I don’t normally drive it and my wife would drive it until something breaks.

First noted the steering wheel pulse at 60 mph and the tires had feathered wear on inside and outside edge. Took it in for alignment and the toe was way off. Pulse persisted and I rotated tires while also checking for looseness in the ball joints and bushings of the UCAs and LCAs, as well as the steering. There was none and the pulse persisted and steadily got worse. Kept researching and finally took it in while she was in for oral surgery.

As noted, 2 tires were particularly bad, one suspected of having the belts in process of separating. Can’t have that on the wife’s car, so I instructed them to replace that one with the spare (10K miles of wear) and bought a new tire for the spare.

Again, I don’t normally drive the car. I do all the work on our cars and I am much more attentive to developing issues. I suspected one or more tires out of round, but did not anticipate belt separation even though I’ve experienced numerous over my 42 years of driving. So I caught it and it’s fixed. The shop suggested that we go with 10 ply rated tires on the next set, especially since my wife likes to take it off-road.
