RTT just sits on the rack as pictured. 23Zero tents (and others, I assume) have a rail on the bottom that a bolt and bolt holder slide into. User slides in a bolt to the 'inside' if the crossbeam and one to the 'outside' of the crossbeam. A flat piece then is bolted to the bottom with 2 locking nuts. Sounds easy, and if you have lots of space under the tent (like I did with my last setup, with Yakima rack and bars) it goes pretty easy. The closer the rack is to the top of the truck, the more difficult it is to start the nut on the bottom. The NiseRack sits high enough that everything fits well, it is just a bit of a chore to get the 'inside' nut into place. Once on then getting it snug with a long ratchet wrench is pretty easy.

Thanks for explaining that. It looks like a good sturdy setup. I’m not ready to buy a RTT yet but I’m thinking about one for the future. I presume you will keep yours mounted permanently.

I noticed you can get black bars from tnutz - is there going to be an option for black brackets? Or would it all just scratch away in no time anyway (I don't know if their black is some basic coating or what)?
Also, am in Canada - tnutz charges a bunch for shipping here, and it's UPS and likely extra duty+brokerage. Anyone know a canadian source?

I’m not familiar with any Canadian sources for extruded aluminum. My order from TNutz was perfectly cut to length and the price in the US was the least expensive.
@ Eitek1
did extensive research for sourcing parts so he would know of alternate suppliers.
Looking at the TNutz site, there’s an option for black anodized.
EX-1030-BLACK – 1″ x 3″ BLACK Smooth T-Slotted Aluminum Extrusion | TNUTZ
On the NiseRack site FAQ section there’s a description of DIY painting the brackets black to match:
Frequently Asked Questions | NiseRack.com
For shipping costs from US to Canada trying contacting TNutz directly. They should know the proper procedure. They may also have an affiliate in Canada.
Their phone number and email are here:
CONTACT | TNUTZ
For shipping the NiseRack brackets, contact Eitek1. You could compare shipping cost of UPS versus the USPS Priority International mail through their websites. I’m thinking USPS will be about $50 US.
Good luck, it will be worth the effort to research this. Let us know your results.

Hey
@ Eitek1
, any thoughts about adding reliefs above one or more of the mounting holes, to match the t-slots in the extrusion to allow for use of slide-in T-nuts?

You’re pretty clever. I was looking at my design and had a ‘Doh Homer Simpson moment a few weeks ago. I should have caught that before. I actually have it designed already and my next batch will feature that.
I was going to have all 3 cutouts available. Due to the fact that when you do that there is only a very little bracket material above the screw, it would be possible to damage the bracket with enough upward force. I’m going to add the cutout to the center channel and you should be able to slide the fasteners right in. The risk of damage from upward force will be mitigated also.
Also, how is it that no one else has figured this out yet?
@ ElectroBoy
this was the change I was referring to LOL.

Don't know about your area but around Buffalo there are American warehouses that accept shipments for Canadians. Canadians then cross the border, pickup the packages and are able to save a lot in brokerage fees etc crossing themselves.

Yep, and I normally do that... but the border is currently closed because of covid...

Ha! I was thinking about that last night but more along the lines of hogging out material on the end of the bars. Maybe with a router bit.
How would you suggest we rework the existing brackets?

All I know is not to use UPS.
Sent a package back in the 90s and UPS held it hostage for some crazy amount up there.

@ Jpilot
I thought I'd be able to get past it but I just can't. That one odd color bolt holding your crossbar on is driving me nuts. Its making my OCD twitch LOL.
If it's still that way let me know what length you need and I'll send you a bolt for it.

Oh, BTW, I just ordered an awning. I think we’re going to have to engineer a bracket for the awning when you get a chance.

Just give me the hole pattern on the awning and I'll take care of it.

Haha, I've built a lot of stuff out of 80/20, and I don't think I've ever managed to get all my slide-in connectors inserted without having to disassemble part of my project after forgetting them! The roll-in connectors solve the problem most of the time but some of the special connectors have to slide in.
FWIW, if you put the one cutout on either the left or right side, you'd have access to the front slot from one side of the rig, and access to the back from the other, although perhaps the desire for symmetry outweighs having access to two slots.
This is a great design BTW, I've been window shopping rack solutions for a while and this is looking like it might be the best fit for my needs.
