I purchased at 60" x 108" piece to cover the whole top.
With regards to color/heat, you are correct, the darker color will allow for additional heat. If you already have a dark vehicle (blacked out), then I don't think it will make a difference.
The full rack I have results in 1/2 the roof being under rows of shade too, so that helps, I suspect.
