For me its cost vs. benefit. If I was going to make a change I would do the H11 to H9 conversion for $30 and replace the $6 light when it quit instead of a very expensive entire corner.

I would think if you were off-roading a lot it would be in your best interest to keep the cheaper incandescent light set up just because it would be a lot more expensive to replace the LED unit when it gets damaged.

i doubt it can be retrofitted easily. and by easily i mean you take out old headlights and put in new and they work. to give you an example i have a 2019 gx460 with double projector leds low beams and the 2020 gx460 headlight is an updated design with triple projector lowbeam and they went with a diff canbus design which requires a 2020 ecu to work.

So what's the over under of us retrofitting these 2021 full LED headlights coming?

Before my 4Runner, I had a 17 Tundra that suffered from the same shitty headlights. In MY 18, they came out with an LED headlight with LED running lights and they looked great, worked even better. They were the exact same light but with different internals. We all asked the same thing. How do we make them fit. It took about two months for someone to come up with a conversion harness to make the 18+ headlights fit prior years. The harness cost about $100 if I remember and used all OEM style connectors and sleeved wiring.

IMO, the same thing will happen here. Somebody will take the opportunity to create a retrofit harness, we’ll all buy it and then work to source the headlights. And yes, Toyota dealers nationwide had no issue selling them.

in reality i am guessing probably just buying the housings will cost closer to $1200-$1500

I would be interested to see the light output and beam pattern on the OEM LEDs. The Morimotos are just disappointing it seems, AlphaRex seems pretty good.

Sadly I’ve tried 3 different high end LED bulbs, every one was awful in the 4Runner housing. Beam pattern and output in anything besides a clear night was very lack luster. If it’s raining out, good luck seeing anything at all.

I’m a big fan of OEM when it comes to things like headlights so I’m pretty excited to see how they preform and the cost. Toe, $1000-1500 is pretty reasonable for an OEM part especially when you consider the 4Runner is a 37K + SUV.

The first mod I did on my rig was get the Phillips HID kit from xenondepot, it's never been a question to me to attempt LED. HIDs for lowbeams vastly outperform LEDs.

I'm looking forward to what people come up with as far as a parts list to swap in the new LED low beams and how much it costs. I'm confident it will be essentially plug-n-play just more expensive #becauseOEM.

I would definitely consider it and I'm going to hold off on any headlight upgrades until we know more.

Exactly. I had a 2016 Tundra with the prince of darkness headlights. Man those sucked worse that the 4Runner headlights

The retrofit for the OEM LED was cake. No reason to think these would be different.

As soon as I bought my Pro I upgraded the lows to 4800k Phillips HIDs, swapped the highs for XD LEDs, and fogs to Baja Squadrons Sports. It's plenty of light for any situation. The new 2021 LED capsules are well overdue, but they don't look very different from the current style capsules. I'm curious to see more info and performance numbers but I'm very happy with my current set up.

I am trying to wrap my head around the LED craze since I have vehicles with LEDs and without them and the only real difference is that the LEDs have a cooler color temperature than the old school bulbs.

An LED setup that is designed to obey federal regulations will give the same brightness and coverage normal headlights do...

I don't disagree that LEDs performance is mediocre and does align with halogen, but I can't follow the logic of your last statement. If this were the case, one of my old Audi A4's with halogen headlights should have performed the same as the OEM bi-xenon housings I replaced them with.

This.

I’m not familiar with the nuanced differences between LED and HID lamps but it appears that LED is becoming the next evolution in headlight tech as companies like Honda/Acura are moving away from their very high quality HID systems to LED.

My assumption is that they modified the existing housing with a lens etc suited for the LED setup and the light output (and color, which I care about) will be significantly improved over the H11 in my 14.

As a result, I’m drooling over these pretty hard. Ive got H9s and BD Squadron-R Pros going in this week so that may change my tune. Same can be said for the pricing on these when it drops.

LED is here to stay because of bulb/chip longevity. They typically last longer than a halogen or HID bulb with the same output. For non 2021 4Runners, I tried LEDs cheap and expensive and have settled on the xenon depo HID kit. I havent looked back. Do I wish I had cooler looking DRLs, sure, but I still have DRLs and its a 4 year old truck based on a 10 yr old platform.

I'm slightly annoyed by their introduction of the LEDs, selfishly because I have a '19. More selfishly because I've spent several hours building a set of plug-n-play bi-xenons that follow my OEM+ aesthetic preference. I hated the XBs and Alpharex because they don't look like they belong on a (enter price tag here) truck that is quite utilitarian by today's standards. I doubt I'll drop my retrofit for these, but it would have been a hell of a lot easier going this route.
