I decided to go back to the OEM rack for now, but I couldn't stand the silver rack that came with the premium package. I completely disassembled the rails and roughed them up with 150 grit, and sanded down the caps with 400 grit just enough to knock the shine off them. I used Hurculiner spray for the rails ($14) and Krylon for the caps ($6). They are a little rougher texture than OEM black rails, but they came out great.
Looks great!
I blacked mine too. My entire 4runner was blocked out except for the silver rack.
Matte vinyl wrap on the rails and bought black end caps.
DO you need to reseal these at all at the roof when removing or just bolt them back on? I've got some vinyl wrap I purchased for this project but have been putting it off until I can get an answer on sealing or not.
After I took the OEM rails off a month or so ago, I tried using the Rhino Rack Backbone system, which I could never get to seal very well. Before putting these back on I cleaned up the brackets and roof ditch and then used some butyl tape from McMaster-Carr. It was $10 for a big roll of it, and I only used about 8" of it. It is definitely worth the time to do it correctly- you don't want leaks.
