roof rack storage that isn't a yakima/thule cargo box?

what are people doing for secure/weatherproof storage on something like a Gobi rack? I really prefer sleeping in my vehicle when out on BLM land or whatever. I don't want to make one of those raised platforms in the back because I want to keep what little headroom I have back there. I don't want a RTT because I have a giant dog that goes with me everywhere and I don't want to lift her in and out of the tent every time she needs to pee or whatever.

Something like a pelican case locked or bolted to the gobi rack? or ???

suggestions appreciated. thanks. I see a lot of pics of people with these high end aftermarket racks but not many photos of anything ON the racks except RTT's. I did a lot of offroading this spring with a Yakima skybox and it didn't work out so well. Flexed a lot, cracked in stress areas when offroading, moved on my rack no matter how much I tightened the clamps, etc.

I don't bolt things to the rack because I want to be able to take them down.

Currently I have 2 Yeti boxes that are waterproof and not too big that work well. I just use tie downs back to front and side to side.

I see people using aluminum boxes too. One friend buys used military medic boxes off eBay and he swears they are waterproof. Or you can drop some coin on something like Zarges boxes, which will last forever. They actually have a bunch of models that are bear proof ...

I use pelican cases, a vault v800 and 1750 case. I just throw them up on the gobi and strap them down. Steel cable to loop through the handles and the rack and secure with a hefty bike lock when needed. Easy to set up and remove. Not the most secure, but provides a little big of theft deterrent when needed.

I've been eagerly awaiting the release of these:

Cargo Cases | Pelican

Originally were due out in the spring and seems like the launch has pushed by several months with COVID-19. Pelican changed them to launching this "summer" but have yet to see anything official.

They're actually shown with Front Runner racks, so thinking they could be a great roof top solution.

What kind of gear are you looking to put up there? You could put some front runner ammo boxes (wolfpacks) up there and they sell bags to put them in up there as well to keep them weather safe.

Those look cool. Hard to tell what their mounting solution is for a rack - looks like an attachment and a strap, which I'm not sure is much simpler than 2 straps.

I have been look for a big waterproof box to put my mountain board up there for a while now, most are not big enough.

Front Runner's XL transit bag was big enough, but they discontinued that product...

Those pelican cargo boxes looks promising tho.

I know this isn’t “cool” but I bought a “no name” rooftop box I bought off of Craigslist and strapped it to a rack of my own design. I drove through all sorts of bad weather and it worked fine. It was a lot of storage too. It didn’t shift, move, crack or anything. I traveled probably 3300 miles and went off-roading a ton. It just existed and held things.

Here is a link to the rooftop storage https://www.homedepot.com/p/SportRac...7095/203672566

Also, I got a ton of requests for my rack so I started producing them

I just picked up a cabelas rife case and a pelican v700. I have prinsu rack. I bolted the case in, but its not problem to be able to strap them down with some tie downs. Only mounted the rife case so far

couple people have suggested the pelican rifle cases. I def have more to carry up top than will fit in a rifle case or two. also think it's weird that people are putting their rifles up top and not securing them against theft.
