TRD Pro Roof Rack is Peeling... !!!
So I went to take my crossbars off of my 2019 TRD Pro today so I could give it a full detail and the coating came off of the rack when I unscrewed the clamp, and then I started looking around and it’s coming off in another place too.
Anyone else’s Pro rack doing this?
Pics below.
I will take it in on Monday because I didn’t want to stop my detailing job for this dumb warranty claim and keep the thread updated.
Honestly, it doesn’t really surprise me that they aren’t actually powder coated. It looks to be aluminum under. I’m not mad about this because I know I will get another rack through warranty, just annoyed.
Also, not that it really matters, but in case you are wondering, my car is garage kept other than when I’m at work.
Well, who else is checking their racks now!?! Haha

Why do you think they're not powder-coated? It looks exactly like what powder-coat looks like when it peels.

I guess because it is so insanely thin, cheap and flaky.
My sliders are powder coated, arrived dented through the powder coating and it was nothing like this.
Maybe they just used the cheapest powder coating available?

I used to work in a powder coat facility. It looks almost like they sprayed over raw aluminum tubing but is difficult to tell in the photos. Surface prep is everything. We would typically aluminum chromate the aluminum before powder... it made the surface accept the powder better and gave it something to hang onto.

Thanks for the info... I’m guessing they must’ve missed a spot!!
Interested if anyone else has had this problem?

Looks like the alum wasn't prepped at all, maybe just wiped down.
Alum takes special care to prep because of the quick oxidation.
Rerally the rougher the better and should be at least acid washed as a final prep.
Any alum we do is orbital sanded if possible or blasted then, degreased, then acid washed and then prepped with chromate or other etching primer. then painted or powder coated.
On the bright side, be glad it's alum, won't rust like a ferrous metal.

Indeed! This aluminum is as smooth as a baby's @ss, looks like the rack prep guy fell asleep the day mine was made!

Update
So, ironically, the Regional Tech who helped handle my steering wheel shake issue was at my local dealership when I stopped by today.
He said that Toyota buys the racks from a 3rd party vendor, documented (with pictures) what was happening to my rack and will send in a report to Toyota Engineering who will inform the company that produces the rack.
They ordered me a new rack and have no ETA on when I get it.
Which leads me to my next question... those of you (
@ daytonaviolet
) who have installed the Pro rack... did you add any sealant when you put your rack on?
My concern is a leaky roof once they break the OEM seal, and I'm assuming they will just plop it on without any sealant.
Thanks!

Pro rack doesn’t utilize any liquid sealant. There is no factory seal so to speak. Your rack and the one on my ‘14 Trail premium would interchange without issue. Unbolt/rebolt and go.
