Looking to use the 4Runner for a 20 ft Airstream with 3800# dry/5000# loaded weight and 550# tongue weight for a short period of time here in Florida.

Would install a WD/Sway, maybe bags to supplement, so just looking at any info on the Trail towing differences.

Thanks
GVWR does not equate to towing capacity. I personally wouldn't want to tow anything above 2500 lbs with the 4Runner, unless it was a perfectly flat road at sea level.

I am currently looking at getting that basecamp airstream and along with it I have been considering supercharging the 4Runner along with getting bigger brakes and tranny cooling.

Everyone has a standard but man that is a low one. I have towed with my 3rd gen all over the place from the rockies to Florida. My 4runner has about 100hp less than you. I found the experience to be adequate.

OP Did you get that trailer yet?

I tow a Wolfpup 16 BHS with my '15 and don't have any issues. I'm running a 4 point sway control WDH and airbags in the rear.

Make sure to haul in S4 and gear down to S3 for hills and you'll be fine (other than never driving past a fuel station without stopping).

We tow a T@b 400 (~3000-3200 pounds actual tow weight) here in CO, and would not want it to be any heavier. You need to get used to screaming around at 4000+ rpm in this thing, and only use it in 'S' mode (we never use 5th gear). We use a brake controller but no sway control, and hav only found sway an issue when on pavement that is severely rutted (i.e. deep tire depressions along the direction of travel) from semi traffic.

The 5th Gen is not a tow vehicle, but it does work. Can't imagine pulling 5000-lbs, though...

Here's a previous post I made on this same subject. Not an Airstream but a similar weight trailer.

A few 1000 towing miles later and trips through GA mountains since that post and I'm still OK with the 4Runner towing performance.

I highly recommend the hitch (quiet & leave connected while backing) & brake controller (clean install) I have.

Airstream basecamp 20X

My bride and I just purchased a loaded Airstream Base camp 20X. We have towed it on a couple of 200 ish mile trips and absolutely LOVE the camper and the 4Runner/base camp combination.
Our 4runner is NOT stock. Larger CAF radiator, 4.88 gears, 285/70/17 E load range tires etc.
Truck weighs 5700 with just me and my wife and a full tank. Trailer is 4300 fully grossed out.
We tow in 4th at about 3100 rpm/60-62 mph. 12.0 miles per gallon over almost 800 total miles. I will flip it up into 5th on long downhill grades.
We use a frame mounted Draw Tite hitch that was meant for an Australian market Prado 150, and a Blue OX Weight distributing hitch.
Last weeks trip to Lake Eufaula in OK. had the CAT Scale reading:
Front Axle 2860 Drive Axle 3440 Trailer Axle 3660
Total Gross 9960
Great trip and very easy to tow.
More to come on The actual towing set up and loading coming soon...

Putting aside payload capacity, the issue can be the trailer pushing around the 4Runner particularly at higher speeds and on non-flat terrain.

I think someone quoted the dry weight and GVWR for the 16' Basecamp and 16' Bambi. They're roughly the same and could both be within spec for the 4Runner. However, the Bambi is wider and taller.

If you're extra cautious, consider the height / shape / width of the trailer when making your decision.
