Wanted: Fishing Rod Storage Solution

Does anyone have a creative and secure solution for storing and transporting fully-assembled fly rods?

Following.
I haven't set mine up yet but I've seen guys have mounts on the inside roof but I'm sure your fly rod is like mine and is longer than the inside of the 4runner. Ive seen some guys lock it into their yakima snowboard/ski racks. But those are the only options I've seen. Hopefully someone else has a good solution.

I saw a ton of the river quivers or Thule Rod Vaults a few weeks ago in Steamboat. Honestly I had never seen one before that trip. Depends on what rod I'm using if it "fits" or not. Right now its a 4wt or a Tenkara. I would think that you would need to be fishing a lot to have it strung up and hanging on your 4Runner all the time, and I fish 3-5 days a week.

What he says ^^^. You can also bend it from the back to the front passenger floor assuming you have no passenger and it's not too long. Seen that done a bunch. I have a 4 piece recon that has a metal tube.

Poles are secured with cable thru spinner bale or between spool and bar on a conventional with a lock.

LOCKING UP YOUR GEAR

With petty theft getting worse, I now keep my stuff locked up, even when running into a tackle shop for bait or a place to grab takeout food, when fishing at places where I’m well away from the vehicle, going in for a meal, etc. AND I take my stuff in at night. I know, a PITA, but seems necessary today.

I use plastic coated cable with a loop swaged at each end. One cable for each rod. One end of the cable is looped to the rod rack, and the other end is passed around the mount shaft and thru the bail of a spinner or around the base and between the spool and a side brace on a conventional. Swages had to be flattened a little more than usual to accommodate some conventionals.

Then the end of the cable is locked to the rod rack with just enough slack that it puts no tension on the rod/reel, which can move up maybe ¼ inch in the rod holder. This keeps at least one set of the circle screw rings for the reel mount down inside the rod holder so a reel cannot be easily removed from a rod and just the rod taken. It also keeps the rod/reel from bouncing up in the holder as an added benefit. I use a set of locks that has a single key, so only one key for all 20 rod holders. And one rod/reel can be removed from its holder with the rest of the rods locked in place.

My coolers are locked to the racks with a cable thru a handle and each cooler has a cable that is looped to the rack that goes over the top of the cooler and is locked to the rack with enough tension to keep the lid from being opened. This top cable also makes it even more difficult to take a cooler off the rack. Same keyed lock set used for coolers.

All the cables used are flexible enough to lock rods/reels as I’ve described but tough enough that pliers type wire cutters would take some time to cut a cable. Thus the quick snatch/go thief is not a problem unless they come with the “JAWS of LIFE” so to speak.

My front and rear racks are locked onto my vehicle with receiver pin locks. With the newer easy on/off rack mounts, it’s just a matter of time before a whole rig (rack, cooler, rods) disappears.

Call me paranoid but I’ve never lost anything since having a couple of rods disappear off my vehicle some years ago on Pea island during the day, with me on the beach over the dune and the vehicle parked on NC12 shoulder out of my sight.

think he's talking about fly rods with reels attached the are far too delicate to drop in a surf rack and you don't have much sticking below the reel anyway .
Mine are broken down and stored in my truck will look for a photo.

The rod vaults on the roof rack are pretty sweet, but I don't get to fish enough to justify one. Personally, most of the fishing is done in brief stops on my way home from work, and I was hoping for a neat, clean way to transport a fully-assembled rig to have at the ready. Straps suspended from the overhead hooks may be easiest way to go, but it feels like there is room for improvement. I do have a molle panel isntalled over the rear passenger-side window, and I've looked for ways to incorporate it but have yet to figure out anything suitable.

next time I come down to Padre I'll call and let you look at them as I pass thru Houston on the way down . I can break it down and have it on a table in the garage in 15 mins so its easy to take out

update

i've used the molle panel in the back window to secure the rod handle and a strap to support the rod itself.

only problem with your set up is the rod blocks the doors when you have another person riding with you. I'm trading for a land cruiser and going to have to build a new set up in the shop this winter

I built one using a 6" conduit carrier kit and a 6" piece of pvc. I think its 8' long. I just throw it up on the roof rack and go.
