Suspension upgrade questions

Hey All,

I have 2017 4runner TRD PRO 45k miles with Stock suspension. I did add some weight to it when I bought it new C4 Low Pro Bumper/W 10k Winch, Gobi Roof Rack, and C4 Sliders.

Adding Soon, rear full bumper with tire carrier, Jerry can mount. Dual Battery and ARB Air Compressor.

I'm starting to see rear and front sag now when I add some more weight to car ( IE, Passengers, Two Water Ports, Coolers, etc Big issue is front sag when I brake.

The question I had is:-

1. is it time to install new shocks anyway? since I'm heading towards 50k miles?

2. should I leave factory TRD shocks and add Dobison heavy-duty springs? to take away the sag and add a lift?

3. Add new suspension that gives me another 2" front-rear lift, Icon, Ironman, Dobison? looking to spend about $2k -$2500.

Thanks in Advance.

50k is about the right time to replace or rebuild (if possible) those shocks. Definitely do a heavier spring set on that rig. Once the heavier springs are on, you are going to want to match some good shocks with it anyways. Then you should do the upper control arms..... See where this is going?
Best bet is to get the whole package with an Icon, Ironman or OME etc kit. You will be set for the next 10-50k depending on the shock package.
Do some research on shock rebuild. Some of the Icon style remote res shocks recommend rebuild every 10-20k. They are amazing performing shocks, but do need some more maintenance.

So I was running TRd Pro suspension on my 2018 for around 30k miles. Nothing wrong with it just wanted to go bigger. I went with the Dobinsons IMS front extended travel and rear twin tubes.

The main reason I went IMS in the front was for when I add more weight (winch) I can adjust it back to 3” of lift. Also the larger diameter body is well worth it. I also added the Dobinsons UCA and have been very very happy with the ride both on and off-road. Reach out to Crikeymike on here with Exit Off-Road he is the man when it comes to Dobinsons in the US.

Thanks, Guys,

I'm thinking about Kings 2.5. Will they be able to handle the front sag that I get when I break? or ill have to change the coil that it comes with to higher rating?

same for the back which spring do you guys recommend for a soft ride but able to handle 300+ pounds.

Regards

I’m sure the kings would do the job just fine. But It depends on your wheeling really. I started off with a basic bilstein 5160/6112 swap, then when I started getting more serious about spending time off-road I moved on to Icon all around. Couldn’t be happier! If you’re adding all that weight and not wheeling all the time I’d say Just upgrade to heavier coils (Dobinsons, icon, eibach, arb, List goes on) And replace your shocks with 5100’s.

Thanks @RustyAb ,

I do very mild off-roading ( mostly fire roads ). What I am looking for is about 2" body lift from what I had with TRD Pro Shocks/Spring Combo and take that front sag out.

I will look into what you suggested.

Thanks

If you’re only really doing mild off-roading the Kings might be a bit overkill? That’s just my opinion on them, I’ve not run them on my vehicle but know a few folks who have and really wheel hard every weekend.

Radflo is also a top tier company as well but again might be overkill?

Good budget friendly but very well performing kits that are probably more suited to mild off-roading would include OME, Dobinsons, & Toytec. Of course those companies also have very high end kits as well.

Keep asking around and don’t rush it and find out you spent $3-5k on a setup you won’t even be able to use 25% of its capabilities of.

King makes awesome suspension though.

Thanks @CollinJ

I did call a few 4x4 parts installers. they all recommend Kings and the setup installed is around 5k. 2nd option I was given is Dobisons MRR I'm looking into that right now.

They all recommended Kings because they want to sell you the most expensive thing possible.

Dobinsons makes some good stuff. The guy Mike on here is great. If you go that route, talk to him.

Realistically you don't NEED super adjustable shocks for driving down dirt fire roads. Sure you can use them, but it's more hassle down the line when they are blown and need to be rebuilt. They also require more maintenance, where a normal shock requires none.

This all matters less if this is a fun vehicle and not your daily. Nothing better than having to be out of luck for a week or two getting a shock sent out and rebuilt.
