PSA for the privacy minded.

My vehicle never had the disclosure. I had to inquire myself. The overhead call button apparently is tracking "location, driving data, vehicle data" which apparently is not limited to exact location, speed driven, and braking. To opt out you have to hit the overhead call button and request an opt out of their "vehicle data transmission", otherwise it is always on without any sort of activation or opt-in.

Isn't it a 'subscription' (that you have to pay for) after 6 months ?
If you don't pay it expires ? (Have to dig and check on that.)

I am not sure, as I was not given any paperwork on it. I am waiting for Toyota to send me full documentation.

I asked the rep over the SOS call and she stated the data tracking was more or less in perpetuity. The ability to call and use the SOS system might be a subscription based service but the data mining seems to be an altogether different matter.

Its also tied to them knowing your mileage and vehicle service needs.

I'm annoyed that the unit is built into my 2020. If anything it's annoying having buttons that will serve no purpose in a few months when the trial expires. I hope to repurpose them or replace them with something functional.

Additionally, if they are continuously data mining my location even after the service expires, that's annoying (although par for the course these days...).

Someone on either T4R.org or .com got torn apart by members calling them a conspiracy nut when they asked how to remove the entire system, so I won't even go there here.

Contact depends on having Cell Phone coverage. (From Verizon)
Dunno if Toyota is going to pay for that after the trial period.

This service has been 'out' since 2009.

As someone with a garage that will never have an automatic door, nor need for the service, I'm all for reclaiming that area for more useful things.

In other vehicles I have had that button location repurposed. Its a nice spot.

I don't think having it removed is going to be all that easy. Its more about minimizing the reach of such things, for me.

Vehicles made after 2013 have an aircraft style black box that can record events leading up to a collision.

I'm aware. However, is that real time? Again, this isn't about completely stopping every form as thats not realistic in 2020. Its more about lower the instances that you have some control over. Doing something is better than doing nothing.

It works off a buffer that is constantly tracking 1000s of data points, but only starts recording on certain actions - if you Google around for the name Toyota uses you can find the manuals, as well as case studies from NHTSA etc.

My new 2020 had a disclaimer sticker up by the SOS button warning me about what data is being collected and how to opt-out. It said to press the SOS button and request to opt-out of the data tracking.

The representative told me that my data was no longer being collected but it required that it would also disable all of the connective features and emergency assistance features.
