If these are the N-Fab RKR rails or made by N-Fab, then they will protect the body, but they will be sacrificial. I say this based on my friend's experience w/ the N-Fab RKR on his SR5 - he says he's used his RKR rails to slide against rocks where it squared off the bottom of the tubing; it still protected the body. (In an unrelated accident, his insurance company replaced his N-Fab RKR with a new set)

In my personal experience, I left the steps on my RKR rails and came down on rock at the edge of the driver-side step. It bent the edge of the step slightly. No other bend on the rail.

I'm going to guess that if Toyota offers a factory rock rail, then it will have to: a) offer adequate protection, yet b) pass federal crash regulations.

Looks like a good middle option, better than nothing at all but doesn't look as strong as the various aftermarket options.

Visually comparing them to the RSB sliders that I just installed, there's less surface contact area between the slider and the frame due to smaller mounting plates. So the force of landing on a rock will be concentrated on a smaller area on the frame. Could it dent the frame or would some other area on the slider fail before that? No idea.

Also, the connection between the frame and the mounting plates look less robust than the aftermarket options, which is expected given it's lighter weight.

My guess is this option is good for the majority of the offroading/overlanding folks out there, the ones who just do light to moderate stuff. The ones who really expect to drop their truck on the slider have already put the beefiest stuff on there already.

Found an eBay listing for these from a Toyota dealer, and they are listed as "W/O KDSS":

You can check with your local dealer's parts department, but this listing seems to indicate that they are NOT compatible with KDSS.

These look A LOT like the Toyota Accessories Rock Rails that they sell for the FJ-Cruizer (but they are a different part number). Looking at the pictures, they are tucked-in pretty tight to the body and don't seem to stick out nearly as far as most aftermarker sliders, so it's unlikely that they will offer any lateral protection when leaning against a rock on the sides (I guess that's why Toyota doesn't call them "sliders"). Also, the frame and intertube crossmembers are fabricated from plates instead of tubes, so those particular areas might not slide across rocks as easily.

Having said all that, due to the fact that they are bolted to the frame rails, they should be a lot stronger than any bars that are only bolted to the body's running board mounts, and should be better at protecting the rocker panels.

Anyone know if they would work on 5th gens from 2010-2013?

Based on how close to the body these mount, I think that would depend upon which version of side skirts you have on the rocker panels. If your's are high and tight like a '14+ SR5, Trail, TRDOR, or TRDP, then you're probably fine. If not, you could swap in the tighter side skirts, or just take your side skirts off and leave them off.

I don't think they changed the hole pattern on the frame rails, based on the fact that most aftermarket sliders are spec'd for 2010-2020.

I picked up my set today and will be installing them in a few hours.

Ok guys, I just finished installing mine and EACH RAIL BOX CONTAINED HARDWARE. So I didn't need to order the hardware, even though I ordered two bags (one for each rail).

Install took about 30 minutes by myself. I found if you remove the brake line screw closest to the rear bracket it allows you to move the line a bit and get a good angle with the socket.

All you need is a 12mm socket for this install, I used two jack stands to set the rail on to get them into position. I started with the rear most bracket, and the bottom hole. Then went to the middle bracket (only one hole) and then the front bracket, bottom hole. From there I snugged them up a bit, but not too tight. Then I inserted the front upper bolt, and then the rear upper bolt. While pushing up on the rail to get it as high as I could, I then snugged them down tightly.

For what its worth, mine didn't come with any instructions, but its pretty self explanatory once you look at it.

I'd be curious if the N-Fab steps could bolt up to these rock rails.
