Maybe I Need a Shrink
OK, I admit, I didn’t really get out and kick the tires and open the hood and refill my blinker fluid, but ...
Yesterday, I took my elderly mother to her doctor, 170 miles away. We went in my 2018 SR5, then having about 36,800 miles on it when I left early in the morning. Drove fine at the legal 80mph speed limit and we had no issue.
After her doctor visit, it was lunch time, so we drove to another part of the city and went through a drive though, got our lunch and found a shady place to park to have our lunch. It was cool enough still that I rolled down the front windows and shut of the ignition.
You know how you might have your cell phone in your pocket and you “feel” it vibrate, but upon checking it didn’t? Scientists call it phantom vibration. I experienced something similar.
As we were eating soon after shutting down the 4Runner, I became aware of very faint but persistant vibration in my feet and lower legs. I felt as though my truck was idling. I checked the dash, the gauges were black, the ignition was off. It was quite busy in the parking lot, with a lot of vehicles moving about, plus those on the boulevard, so, there was a lot background ambient noise; enough so that even if my truck was idling, I wouldn’t have been able to hear it. I figured it must be phantom vibration, so forgot about it and continued with my lunch.
After about 15 minutes, I was still feeling the vibration. So I turned the key to the on position. The gauges booted, the infotainment system booted as normal. The vibration was still there. I shut off the ignition again. Vibration quit. I noted to Mom what I was feeling, she said she felt the vibration also, and she also felt it quit.
Since then, I am getting a MAINTENANCE REQUIRED SOON message in the display between the speedo and tach. I checked my maintenance apps and nothing is close to the date/mileage to address them. The truck now has just over 37,000 miles after coming home. Since this message just started I know it isn’t reminding me of anything needed to be addressed for a 35,000 service interval. So I got brave and reset the message as per the owner’s manual on page 345.
The truck is driving normally. No check engine light or any other warning lights are lit.
Anyone else experience this? Or do I need a shrink??

My experience is that the 'Maintenance Reminder' message isn't tied to anything besides when you reset it (set the odometer to Trip A, key off, hold the odometer button while turning on the key and keep holding the button, message will show resetting, etc.)
I don't even think the stuff in Entune has any inkling what is going on with that message.
The phantom feelings... maybe that will need someone more professional than me.
The Maintenance message is a 5000 mile expiration.
But that's just what I know.

hIt could have been the fuel evacuation check system. I hear it from time to time. completely normal unrelated to the service light.
edit; fuel evaporation system.

The fuel evaporative test is supposed to run about 5 hours after you turn off the vehicle, presumably after it cools down. But there’s at least one user who reports it happened to him much sooner.

This.... i have had mine rub much sooner then 5 hours. Maybe within an hour of driving on multiple times.
Since its like a fan/compressor noise it could totally send a small vibration/noise through the floor.

Oddly enough I’ve had the opposite, much longer than 5 hours.
I usually would get home from work at idk 7:30-8p, shut it off and go inside. I’d get up for a run at 4:30-5am the next day, go out into the garage and hear what sounded like a whine coming from the rear of the vehicle. Only noticed it a couple times.

I did a quick Google check before posting. Even though I was specific as to make, model, year and symptoms, results were mostly irrelevant. But I did find some fuel system results, but for 3rd gen Runners.
As my original post alluded to, I can’t confirm if the engine was actually running, since I didn’t actually open the hood and look for evidence that it was. Or roll up the windows so I could hear the engine. Or look at the tach after turning on the ignition to see if it was registering RPMs. Or call my shrink ...
I noticed the maintenance reminder shortly after the incident yesterday. The maintenance reminder was different than those reminders generated from the Entune system, but I didn’t take the time today to really read up on its purpose. Entune reminders go out after a few seconds. This reminder stayed on unless I used the display button to change to another display, such as miles per gallon or miles remaining on the tank of gas. What I did make out from the manual, the reminder appeared to me to be that for routine maintenance intervals, so I reset it.
Thanks for your input. Now I’ll go put on my aluminum foil hat ...

I know in the 4Runner as well as other vehicles I've had the fuel system run evap cycles either right after shutting the vehicle off or hours later after sitting for a while (I've gone into the garage and heard mystery noises). Here is a thread where I think people talk about it.
Additionally, there might be more systems that do that up in the engine bay.
So you might not be crazy after all! Hard to put your finger on it though.
