Bypassing awful Microphone 2017 TRD Pro

I apologize in advance for posting on something where there are previous links but none of them have given a good answer to the question.

I have a 2017 TRD pro and I use an Apple iPhone. Whenever I try and do anything by voice, the TRD microphone takes over and it's awful...it will get the first couple of words and then "hangs", half of the words are mis-transcibed due to the poor pickup. Its so bad that if I want to be safe and send a text by voice transcription, I have to shut down Bluetooth on my phone, do the voice text, then turn Bluetooth back on so I can make calls using the car system (where the sound is also atrocious but at least functional).

Is the only option to disable the onboard mic completely, or install a new aftermarket mic (which I've heard also entails making sure you kill the onboard mic as well)?

Thanks in advance for any guidance.
