Does the VIN tell what model you have?

The reason I’m asking is I was reviewing my insurance renewal for my Pro and it was listed as a SR5. I told the AAA insurance representative that a Pro is quite a bit more money and slightly different than a SR5. I checked the VIN on the vehicle and online and it comes back as a SR5. I purchased it new off the Toyota showroom floor two years ago with 4 miles. If so, I need to have them update the trim. Anyone know or run into this issue with their insurance?

Had that issue too with my ORP. VIN showed SR5 but toyotas vin website showed it as an offroad. Had to go in and how them all the paperwork.

Toyota usually doesn't have Vin specific models. The only model I know if is the rav4

Thanks Kevin. I went to Toyota’s VIN decoder and it showed everything. Now I will have to ask AAA which document they want.

Similar to this issue...

Just for shits n grins, I checked mine. It comes back as an OR (which is correct) but there's some dealer installed equipment not listed on my VIN report. It captured all the factory and port stuff, but not the dealer installed heritage grille or the pro roof rack.

Question is...should I ever get into an accident, will the shop replace the grille with the standard OR (non-heritage) grille, or would they most likely replace it with what's on there, the heritage?

Not really worried about the roof rack.

I would take a few picks that show your license plate and if you have your sales contract that states these additions I would use this or provide your insurance company with that info. As for the rack, lol.

Update: I contacted AAA today and they made notes after they went to Toyota’s website and found that my VIN showed a TRD PRO and how it was equipped. Obviously, they would have to cover the vehicle based on Toyota’s VIN, but, this was a little piece of mind and some good info. Thanks to SpeedyKevin again for the tip.

I checked my 2020 Pro and it’s good. Something would happen your insurance should know just by the Vin what model it is. My salesman I deal with all the time also had told me couple years back just by the Vin number let’s you know it’s a Pro or what model you have.

Correct. Toyota VINs do not decode specifically down to the trim on third party sites/systems.

I think the VIN is usually pretty accurate on the Toyota site.

I know someone that bought a Pro from a dealer second-hand. It has the badging and grill, but didn't look right. I looked at the suspension, saw a spacer lift. Looked at the skid, not TRD. Ran the VIN, and guess what? Not a Pro.

I am an insurance agent / broker that represents (sells) products from multiple insurance companies. They all have their own rating platform (software) that tries to decipher the VIN's and identify the trim level and all the options installed on the vehicle. Sometimes the systems do not properly decode the VIN, it is usually a problem with new model year vehicles. When this happens I ask the customer what trim level the vehicle is and what features it has. Some companies allow the agent to edit the data for the trim level if the system did not properly decipher the the VIN, but some companies do not. For example my Mustang Shelby GT350 shows up as a Mustang GT. I called the carrier and they said that the system does recognize the difference between a GT and a GT350 but there is no rating / pricing difference between the two. From a claims stand point, the insurance company will base the repairs / value on the VIN and the manufacture's identification of what trim that vehicle is. I would advise anyone to make sure that their declarations page shows the trim level of their vehicle and the correct VIN. If the declarations page shows a different trim I would E-Mail the agent or the insurance company's service department and advise them of the discrepancy. They might not be able to change it but you will have notified them. Always email to create a tracible digital trail. Also, make sure that you notify your insurance agent / company of any aftermarket upgrades. Most policies do not cover much more than $1,500 of aftermarket parts without a specific endorsement. One more thing, some companies don't like to insure lifted vehicles, ask your agent and find a different insurance company if you need to. You don't want to find this out during a claim.
