ICON Gear Shift Knob/Transfer Case Knob

Well after a week of waiting for my fancy new shifter knobs from ICON the gear shift knob doesn't fit! I removed the factory gear shift knob and proceeded to screw the ICON knob on it kept going and going and eventually it stopped when it was against the plastic on the gear shifter gate. So needless to say they will be returned just curious if anybody else has ordered these and had this problem or is it just company's sending me things that don't fit. I could probably get a nut that is the same thread pattern as the actual shifter and run it on and then run the shifter on but what is the point of spending $144.00 dollars on 2 shifters if they need to be modified right out of the box!

You need to call them and tell them that you need the shorter one, I think it's actually from the FJ. I love mine.

I had a Sparco one on one of my previous vehicles that came with different depth adapters. Not sure about the ICON ones, but thought I throw it out there.

They were plastic inserts that you pushed into the knob and the levers screwed into these sleeves.

okki I thought about getting a small plastic adapter or something but the point it is I shouldn't have to modify a 75 dollar shifter. I am considering the FJ shifter now it is off a manual?

it's weird. in the parts catalog for the 2010 FJ it's listed as "auto trans manual trans" so i assume that means it's for both. i should have mentioned before that the shaft is a bit too long (just like the Icon one) so i just took it apart and trimmed it ~1/4" to fit. it's a less expensive part, but you may not want to do that as you mentioned. it is pretty trivial, however, in view of all the wrenching you've done on your rig as of late!

I like the FJ knob over the stock titanic shift knob.

Same thing happened to me. Sent me the long one, put it on, way too long...sent me the other one it did not match.

I ended up just cutting off the long one with a hacksaw. I did not like the looks of the short one on the transmission, just seemed to short for me. It took about 30 to cut with a hacksaw and new blade. It is just aluminum and cuts like butter!

Wow, I love the look of the FJ knob. Particularly, in light of how strange the 4Runner is...

The 4Runner shift knob has horrible ergonomics, especially when using the sport-shift mode and trying to navigate the storage compartment.

Please excuse my ignorance, but I'm not following your comments about needing to trim - Do you mean you actually cut the rod coming up from the console, or that you somehow modified the actual knob...?

Well the shift knobs have been returned and I actually just got off the phone with ICON they apologized for the knobs not being correct and were very friendly on the phone and actually a pleasure to deal with even though I was returning items. It is a shame the knobs didn't work out I am probably going to do the FJ shift knob like sandcrawler.

thanks, i really like the FJ gearshift too; way more ergonomic for S-mode shifting, imo. got the idea when i was poking around a TT FJ while picking up my Trail this march. i had my first mod queued before i even signed papers! (second mod, i suppose; had the dealer install Duratracs pre-delivery.)

to your question, the shaft of the FJ knob is a bit too long so if you screw it on tightly "as is" it will bash the plastic in the shift gates. to make it fit properly i took the knob apart and cut a small section of the lower center portion out and then epoxied it back together. it looks stock and you'd never know the knob was mucked with.

you could also get an adapter, i suppose, but then the knob would sit a little higher.

Thanks for the info/clarification.

The more I started being aware of the main shifter the more I think it's the weirdest dang device...

Anyway, I ordered one and hope to have it shortly. Thanks, again, for sharing your "mod" advice.
