Is my transfer case leaking???? Pic inside...
2017 TRD Pro, 31k miles, I am the second owner and just purchased the vehicle in June.
I got under the truck to grease the propeller shaft and I noticed this area of rust. It was wet with some kind of oil. I wiped it clean, drove for a couple days and went back under. There was a drop of some oil/fluid just about to drip off. FYI, was not raining at all leading up to me finding it or after I wiped it clean. Doesn't appear to be leaking from any other place besides that circled area.
Is this a transfer case leak? A leak from somewhere else? Normal?

It does appear to the output shaft seal on the tcase, looks like it dripped down onto the case bolt just beneath it

Rear drive shaft output seal. Just had it replaced on my 2018. (warranty)
I could wipe it clean then next time I checked there would be a bubble of oil in the exact same spot as in your picture. Never did drip on the garage floor.

Way worse than leaking, its covered in rust.
Probably the rear seal, I replaced mine a while back, very easy. My leak was actually the unused speedo sensor

Does this fall under the 60mo/60k powertrain warranty?

What's the possibility of the rust preventing a tight seal when the seal/gasket gets replaced? I'll probably bring this to the dealer (especially if it falls under powertrain warranty), but I like to know what needs to be done rather than hope they get it right.

Oil prevents rust - it doesn't cause it.....

The part with rust on it in the pic is just a shield. It would not effect the seal.
The seal should absolutely be covered under the 5 year 60k powertrain warranty. It's a simple job, so it shouldn't take long for them to do.

I don't quite understand this either. I thought maybe it was rusting from exposure to road water, but there was a drip right at that location after wiping it all clean.
I also thought it was interesting that 2 of the 4 bolts look like they've been replaced, and the other 2 look fairly rusted. I'm hoping there isn't some lingering issue that couldn't be resolved by the previous owner.

Most likely it was driven on salt covered roads in winter, and/or on the beach. That salt water gets splashed up on the undercarriage and drivetrain components. If it's not washed off with fresh water, where it accumulates will eventually rust or corrode, depending on whether we're talking Steel or Aluminum. The flange dust shield is steel, so it rusted.
At some later time, the T-case output seal developed a leak, so now that rusty dust shield has gear oil dripping off it.

Original owner was from Canada, so I think that all but rules out driving on the beach lol

Who knows. It could have been driven lots of places. People from Canada take trips too.

But absolutely confirms the salt issue!
