Light output and safety

The purpose of headlights is to make the truck look good. Light output and safety are really insignificant but would be "nice to have".

And this is the reason that I frequently post in lighting threads.

Toyota can't just stick LEDs in the current housings and call it a day. They have spent at least two years testing the lighting units and they will deliver a lighting unit that meets the Federal requirements - something no aftermarket unit can do.
I would like to see a focus on safety, but expect Toyota will be going for what sells the most units at a price point. Lights that look good in the showroom and on the test drive. Throwing a lot of white light everywhere without focus is a distraction to oncoming traffic and gives little distance. There’s a reason that led replacement bulbs in halogen housings aren’t street legal. Performance in inclement weather, and heat to help melt snow and ice, are rarely considered. I think some of us are still better served by high performance halogens. It will be interesting to see what capabilities the new headlights offer.

I agree. In Europe, HIDs require washers and LEDs require heaters.

HID low beam lighting (from the factory - not for the 4R) probably gives the best performance when paired with halogen highs, but LEDs are the light of the day because it looks cool and lasts forever.

Halogen lows are obviously quite effective - for the 4R using the high performance bulbs.

The lighting engineers today would design a HID low/halogen high. In a few years, they will be designing laser lighting. LEDs are an interim measure.

Super easy install and they have been reliable. It gives the truck a much better look, but as I’ve been using them for a while now, I’m not all that thrilled with the light output. It really seems to be about equal to what I was getting with the stock halogens, but just a nice white color. So...my question is...does anyone know if Toyota is using the stock projector housing and just sticking their own LED bulbs in there, or it a redesigned housing? If they are using the stock housing, I imagine that we’d be able to buy the Toyota LED bulbs and make a simple swap? I’m wondering which manufacturer is making the LED headlight bulbs for Toyota.

No. LED headlight conversion kits are only designed to work with stock halogen bulbs and assemblies.
