Question about 2021 standard LED headlights.

I replaced the stock halogens in my 2019 Pro with the Morimoto 2stroke LEDs. I couldn’t stand the look of having halogen headlights with the stock LED fogs. Super easy install and they have been reliable. It gives the truck a much better look, but as I’ve been using them for a while now, I’m not all that thrilled with the light output. It really seems to be about equal to what I was getting with the stock halogens, but just a nice white color. So...my question is...does anyone know if Toyota is using the stock projector housing and just sticking their own LED bulbs in there, or it a redesigned housing? If they are using the stock housing, I imagine that we’d be able to buy the Toyota LED bulbs and make a simple swap? I’m wondering which manufacturer is making the LED headlight bulbs for Toyota.

I'm not sure we know yet. I do think that if it's an easy change, thousands of us will be making the move.

Chances are they will re-do the housings. LED emit light differently than halogens and will take a slightly different housing to properly distribute the light.

Agreed, if Toyota just throws an LED bulb in.... that’s a huge let down and mistake IMO by Toyota.

They will probably add in non-replaceable LED modules that are a sealed unit like some manufacturers already do.

Everyone is just assuming these are going to be amazing too without having seen them in action. They could be a massive let down like the halogens are.

Perhaps. I don’t think it’s possible to get great results with the existing housing and LED bulbs. If there is a new housing, maybe it will be an easy retrofit.

Swap-in LEDs won't ever work well in the OEM projectors, they're essentially crap. If you're set on going with LED, only a full retrofit to an LED projector (like those done by Kustom54) OR a whole new light housing (like one from Xenon Depot) will work.

Here is the thread on this. When the parts are available and there is a procedure on what’s required to make the change it will be posted here.

I have a 21 on order so I hope the LEDs are nice. They did a great job on the 20 TRD Pro Tacoma LEDs so Im hoping the 4R follows suit.

I am anxiously stalking my Toyota dealer for when the 2021's come in. I am interested to see if the new headlights are plug and play compatible. Crossing my fingers

I am waiting for the '21 because of LED's too. Can you share your waiting time for the order and were you able to get any discount?

Just to give you another data point, I also have a deposit down on a 2021 - should be picking it up next week.

Couldn't get much of a discount...less than $1,000 off MSRP.

Most everyone here is missing the point on headlights, but this guy gets it.

The purpose of headlights is to make the truck look good. Light output and safety are really insignificant but would be "nice to have".

And this is the reason that I frequently post in lighting threads.

Toyota can't just stick LEDs in the current housings and call it a day. They have spent at least two years testing the lighting units and they will deliver a lighting unit that meets the Federal requirements - something no aftermarket unit can do.
