Agreed on the BMW B58 3.0L I6 twin scroll turbo. It's what came in my newly acquired 340 (because fat guys don't look good in Supras). The maintenance costs are surely going to be pricey, and the low end torque (<2000rpm) sure doesn't feel like it would be sufficient for low speed 4WD up an incline let alone hauling a boat out of the lake up the ramp. In a car it's fine, but I wouldn't want it in a truck or truck based SUV.
I drove the stock 1GR-FE and eventually strapped on the URD/Whipple supercharger kit because of lack of power when hot & high. I would rather have had the 4.7L V8 2UZ-FE from the 2nd gen Tundra / 4th gen 4Runner. Dad had a Tundra and there was plenty of torque down low and was smooth. I'm not so sure about the replacement, 4.6L 1UR-FE, but I've not driven a GX470 or Tundra with one. Ideally the 5.7L V8 3UR-FE would be great, but in that tight of space who would actually want to do anything but drain fluids from it!?
OP you're stuck with the 4.0L I6 1GR-FE unless you jump over to the Lexus GX470 where you get the 4.6L V8 1UR-FE. On the other hand, if you want more power it's available. Magnuson and URD both have supercharger kits available for the 4Runner.

You can run any engine you want as long as you have the money for the swap. Nothing is going to bolt right in though.

Engine response

I found that my new 4Runner felt much more sluggish when new because the adaptive transmission hadnít yet learned my driving style. I drive it with a very heavy foot and you canít be hesitant to mash the pedal down. The problem of perceived sluggishness seems to be more with how the pedal interfaces with the engine, which accounts for the popularity of accessories like Sprint Booster and Pedal Commander with these models. I am getting tired of mashing the pedal down so frequently for every day driving such as merging lanes. The 5th Gen is reported to have a 0-60 time of 7.5 - 7.7 sec., which isnít so bad for a vehicle this size with a naturally aspirated engine. I preferred the feel of the V-8 from my Ď04 GX 470. I donít know why Toyota stopped offering that engine in the 4Runner.
