The 5th Gen 4Runner is roughly the same weight as most current crew cab 4x4 half ton trucks, but about 100hp short under the hood. It felt slow because it is pretty slow by modern standards. It's adequate, especially if you leave it mostly stock. But it's due for some new power plant and transmission options. Hopefully coming soon?
And your initial reaction is pretty close to mine. The v6 should be the base engine as it was in the 4th gen and there should be a v8 or turbo 6 as an option. A couple supercharger options do exist. They're all around $7k plus or minus a bit to get installed. But that's about the only power upgrade that exists.
