Are there different engines for 5th gen T4Rs?

So I’m curious if there are different power plants for the different 4Runner trims? Like does an SR5 come with a different engine than say a TRD Pro?

Could you tell me in what trim levels does the 4.0L come standard?

All the same V6 making the same power across the board. The 4 banger was a one year (2010) only 2wd option that didn't sell.

2010 was the only year for the 2wd 2.7l. The 4.0l v6 is common across all trim levels in the 5th gen.

Interesting. Very interesting. I recently drove a 2020 4R as a loner car while my 3rd gen 4Runner was getting some maintenance done. While there were certain aspects of the 5th gen I was very impressed with I was a little disappointed by the power. It seemed quite slow and lumbering. The throttle response was slower as well. And this 4Runner only had 400 miles on it.

Folks use pedal comander device to improve throttle response. I just use a heavier foot on the gas pedal to get the response i want, but you are correct it could use more horses but what vehicle wouldnt. I have a 3rd Gen and a 5th gen. The 5th gen has 80 more hp's but weighs more too. long distance driving trips etc are much more comfortable for the family in the 5th and the wife prefers it. Also it tows the travel trailer better. Don't want to start a 3rd Gen vs 5th gen debate. The 3rd Gen is easier to work on for sure.

The 5th Gen 4Runner is roughly the same weight as most current crew cab 4x4 half ton trucks, but about 100hp short under the hood. It felt slow because it is pretty slow by modern standards. It's adequate, especially if you leave it mostly stock. But it's due for some new power plant and transmission options. Hopefully coming soon?

And your initial reaction is pretty close to mine. The v6 should be the base engine as it was in the 4th gen and there should be a v8 or turbo 6 as an option. A couple supercharger options do exist. They're all around $7k plus or minus a bit to get installed. But that's about the only power upgrade that exists.

It never really gets snappy, but I found my 4Runner to pick up some after breaking it in. Installing the TRD exhaust helped a bit, too.

It's a good point about the weight. You don't realize how much bigger the 5th gen is until you see them side by side or drive them back to back. The 5th gen is about 800lbs heavier in curb weight (depending on models). Here are my 2 (2002 and 2020)

No, and I'm not even sure the 4 banger existed but someone claimed to have seen one on eGay.

If only Toyota resisted the urge to keep enlarging each vehicle........kept the size of the Original and put a 4.0L in IT!

is there even a more powerful toyota engine one could swap? I'm sure the tundra /land cruiser V8 doesn't fit? What about a current-gen Supra crate? Even the highlander engine has a little more up top, although I'm sure the power band/tuning is dramatically different?

The 5.7 would fit. They stuffed it in a Tacoma. No thanks on the BMW Supra motor. How about a Toyota V8 diesel from the 79?
