You can't really stop stupid/bold thieves from stealing your vehicle if they really wanted to, especially if they're nearby and see you you "lock your vehicle" using the keypad.

Sure the odds of someone stealing a 4Runner is very low but nonetheless there is still always a chance it could happen. I'd rather not contribute to the odds of it being stolen so I'll keep my keys on me since I need it to access my residence.
All good points but if I'm in a sketchy area I hide the key inside in a spot it would be hard to find or take it with me.

Its great for camping so you don't have to carry your keys, especially if you are swimming or biking.

I personally like it because my kids do a lot of sports and are constantly needing to go get stuff from the truck so they can run out, unlock the truck and get what they need without having to come get the keys from me and possibly losing them.

A special 2 button push locks it. Then your own personal code you create unlocks it. I can just keep my keys in the center console.

There was very little info on the net about it when I bought my truck last month. It is very new. I'm glad I have it though, I've used it a few times in the last couple weeks. We were negotiating on a vehicle and a competitor dealer had one on their vehicle I was going to get. My local dealer met their price and added this to match the specs/deal. They were able to install it at the local dealer. It does get wired in and at first I of course noticed it, but after a couple days of driving, I don't notice it anymore. It isn't in my vision or blocking anything.

The only thing I do not like is that is designed to be installed on the windshield. I don’t believe it is reusable if you have to replace the windshield. It’s a cool thing to have, but I’m not sure if insurance would pay to replace it with a windshield replacement.

Here are pics of the touch keypad and the backside.
What was the price for the keypad listed for on the dealer sticker?

Right on man I can see where you're coming from now from a parent's POV!

The MSRP on the sticker for it is $349. I think I got a good negotiated deal on my truck with all my options and was working a few dealers against each other. It was included on my truck as an add on for the price we agreed on and they put it on at the dealer without increasing the cost.

So, is this a new vehicle dealer installed option?
I would like to have it on my 2019 4runner sr5.

I have it on my 2020, and I have used it.

But after thinking about it, I don't really believe it makes all that sense if you're looking to be able to leave your keys in the car. These cars don't come with glass break sensors as standard (you can add them as an OEM accessory AFAIK), so anyone could break a window, climb in, and drive the car off. It's not like it immobilizes it.

That's disquieting.

But they won't know you have the keys in it. In a parking lot full of cars why would they get lucky enough to smash your window and find the key?

As an Insurance agent, I can assure you that the key pad would be covered during a windshield replacement. Since it is a Toyota part it would be considered OEM and be replaced if necessary. If they didn't consider it an OEM part, most policies cover minor aftermarket parts. Usually up to $1,500, but you need to check your policy to make sure. If your policy doesn't have minor aftermarket parts coverage included you can add it by an endorsement. With the endorsement you choose how much coverage that you want /need. Those that have aftermarket bumpers, wheels and tires, lift kits, rock sliders, etc. need to make sure that you have an endorsement for the value of your mods. Feel free to pm me if you have questions.

How would this work for push to start models? Does it have an interface to invalidate the fob while it's in the vehicle? Don't matter where you hide the fob, the vehicle will still start. I can just keep the fob in my pocket and when I put my hand on the door handle, everything unlocks.

Fob invalidation absent a correctly entered code would indeed solve the security issue. Smash and go would be thwarted.

Can anyone with a pad installed test this out?

Ha, good one. Thanks for sacrificing a window.

Test would be to sit inside the vehicle with fob, reach out window to pad lock it, then try to start.

Or fob inside, pad lock, reach through open window to try to start.

I have the keypad on my 21 orp. You can lock with keys in it. You cannot open from the door handle even with the keys laying on the seat. But..... you can start the vehicle from inside when locked with the keypad.

This is cool, I'd consider installing one.

When surfing, I carry a small "dumb key" in the water that only unlocks the doors. And then I put my ignition key inside a Masterlock combo keybox in the glovebox. Sure, someone can break into the lockbox to get the key, but good luck doing it quickly.

That answers the Q then. Thanks.
