PSA! Next time it rains, check your sharkfin antenna and the rear of the headliner... The seal around mine was f*cked and the fin itself was warped upward slightly. During a particularly rainy day I noticed a puddle of water in the rear trunk area and looked up to find the edges of the headliner wet from the rear all the way to around (both sides) to the passenger doors. I did an emergency silicone job and duck-taped a plastic bin over the sharkfin to cover it overnight while the silicone dried.

Next couple of days it was a warm sunny so I kept the windows cracked and ran a fan in there, dried everything up no problem. Did some research and ordered a used tacoma antenna that matched my paint color and installed it. Problem solved.

Note the drops of water forming under the antenna nut and connection...

Had to do the silicone in the rain, huge PITA...

To keep the rain off the silicone overnight and hope the wind didn't blow it off:

Rode around like this for about a week, ghetto but it worked like a champ. There is extra in the front because the sharkfin was sort of warped up from sun damage I assume...

And for the record... this is what was inside the nearly empty shell of a sharkfin on mine:

Here is a picture showing the SAME CHIP XM in the tacoma antenna which was appropriately sized:

Installed the tacoma antenna with some fresh silicone to ensure it never leaks again

Looks factory!

Additional information:
The tacoma antenna cost me $40 on eBay. Here are the two threads that gave me all the info I needed. There are plenty of folks who had different antenna's in their sharkfin:

Low profile XM (shark fin) antenna swap

Hondo Garage's New Thing | Page 308 | Tacoma World

There are some different wire connectors that Toyota chose to use for different years and the Tacoma connection on mine didn't match my '16 trail premium. I don't use XM anyway so I didn't care about reconnecting the wiring as I just wanted a sealed roof!

Depending on the year/trim it seems like some do actually make use of the mostly-empty space: https://www.toyota-4runner.org/2872798-post129.html

Part numbers:
Tacoma PN: 86960-04010-B1
Corolla PN: 86960-33010-B1

The last two letter/digits in the PN are the Toyota Color Codes:
A0 = White
C0=Black
G0=Dark Green
B0=Silver
J1=Blue Mica
D0=Red
E0=Beige
H0=Turquoise
J0=Dark Blue
B1=Gray

Subaru Tweeter Mod

I don't remember where I saw this but I ordered these kicker tweeters (PN: H631SFJ101) that were made for Subaru's but are a direct drop in replacement of the 5th gen tweeters: Amazon.com: Genuine Subaru H631SFJ101 Tweeter Kit (1 Pair): Automotive

This job takes all of 10 minutes:

Protect yo dash!

Unscrew the bolts on either side of the speaker (you can leave the bolts closest to the windshield):

Flip it over, pull the plug:

Kicker fits like a glove! (not shown: the wire connector is identical!)

Passenger side:

I gotta say, there is a very noticeable difference in sound. The highs are crisp and CLEAR and not drowned out by the engine/road noise like before.

For $99 this was well worth it.

Canvasback Installed

While I don't have a dog or intend to bring animals in my vehicle, I do tend to carry messy equipment/tools/lumber in the rear and really just wanted to protect the back of my rear seats.

Vacuumed first:

Easy easy install:

I also picked up a rear cargo net. It seriously comes in handy for grocery store runs or when I've got something small that I don't want rolling around. PN: PT347-89100

(I really need a car wash...)

Drivers Side "Oh Shit" Handle Mod

I had seen @Saker do this mod using the kit that @Jasontamu put together. I ordered the kit from Jason and the necessary Toyota parts from my local dealer.
More info here: https://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-g...-2014-t4r.html

From what I can tell, 5th gens come in two color styles for the pillar covers: B0 (silver) or E0 (beige).

Mine is B0:
Grip Handle 74680-60010-B0
Grip Handle Hole Cover 74616-60040-B0
Grip Handle Hole Cover 74615-60040-B0

Here are pics from the install, although Saker's guide is all you really need!

A-Pillar cover removed

Underside

I found that a sharp wood chisel and a hammer was the way to go in order to remove a section of the black plastic

Very clean and easy

Took some measurements and marked the hole

I bought this bit specifically for this project and boy do I love it. I am sure it will be put to good use down the road.

Noice

To test fit alignment I used the end of a spade bit up top and Jason's mount below

I was very satisfied with how it lined up. I think I measured 15x times before I drilled anything. xD

Test fit in the vehicle without the pillar guard

I noted that it caused the pillar cover to bulge a tiny bit near the windshield (follow the black edge of the windshield and you'll see it)

Ultimately determined that I needed to trip out just a tiny bit more of the underside of the cover

Easy

Prepped for drilling to secure the mount to the frame

The frame is not perfectly flat so Jason includes washers to compensate

I should have started this project earlier in the day... night time came quickly and it was a huge PITA working with flashlights... I did get it secured to the frame though

When test fitting the handle again I noted that the protruding plastic on the handle needed to be shaved down just a tad

I took about 1/16th off (right side)

Everything looks flush from the outside

Very satisfied with the outcome! And I find it useful getting in and out of the vehicle.

More to come!

What speakers did you go with for the six?

My recommendation, so that you can appreciate your investment more, swap out the tweeters before doing the speakers and go for a test ride. Then go back to install the rest. :P

I went with the red stiching to match my ORP trim, was the extra $20 worth it? well that's up to you

But as a dog owner, if you think that would save you from dog hair let me tell you something......

I take it you don't have a dog

No dog here so I will take your word for it ;) I know that canvasback sells additional covers that go up the sides of the rear over the wheel wells and stuff. I just wanted the covers in case muddy equipment gets thrown in the rear.

Big fan of simple (practical) mods that make the vehicle experience more enjoyable.
I agree, the sharkfin is stupid. Especially from an aesthetic perspective considering that for Camry's, Taco's, Scions, etc.. Toyota made color matching antenna's!

The handle is a must-have. I've got a family member with a '16 taco who wants one.... I wonder if Jason's mount would actually fit...

How do you reach the bolts? Looks like they take a 10 mm socket, but they are really close to the windshield.

10mm socket is correct. I had no issues accessing with my dewalt impact drill. Definitely used a small ratchet wrench as well.

I bet it would fit with a little tinkering. The only real differences that I can see (without having pulled off the a-pillar cover on the taco) is that the angle of the pillar is a bit steeper between the dash and roof, and the pillar is slightly shorter. I suspect that neither of these would cause an issue with Jason's mount. Just need the right taco handle.

Grille Cover Install
There are a bunch of guides on how to do this install but I found this one to be the most detailed and helpful: 4Runner TRD Pro Grille Install - YouTube

PLEASE do yourself a favor and put the letters on the grille cover before installing on the vehicle... (see below)

Cleaned up my front bumper where the grille will go (I keep meaning to go get the rig detailed...)

Ready to swap out the upper grille

Boom bam! Easy:

Getting it centered up was nerve wracking because I am so OCD... eventually I got it.

WORD FOR THE WISE.... Put the damn letters on FIRST. I wanted to pull my hair out trying to figure out how the hell to get everything lined up. I even tried stacking some wood beneath in order to create a level surface to hold the letters up (that didn't work). YES the letters have little points that correspond to the dimples in the grille cover but there is too much play and you can easily install a letter just slightly sideways.

I ended up using a ruler and tape and spent about an hour getting things lined up to my satisfaction:

I also discovered that the damn O's are slightly larger and the height messed with the ruler so I installed the O's LAST. (my order of install was T Y T, A, O and O)

Finished product was a very sweaty brow and sigh of great relief!

Also installed those raptor lights but left the wires hanging as I wanted to wire them up with a switch...

I am very happy with the new look!
