Looking at a '16 TRD Pro, worth it?

Hey All
My bro is about the join the 4R family. He is looking at a 2016 TRD Pro with about 64k miles.

It's TRD Pro stock but has:

275/70/17 BFT KO2
Whiteknuckle offroad sliders
upgraded headlight bulbs and fogs possibly

Dealer is asking $39k. Worth it?

He was looking at TRD ORP, Limiteds for similar price but he would have had to go out and spend money on a lift, trd rims, new bfgs and sliders

Bilstein 6112/5160s - $1200ish
TRD Rims - $?
275/70/17 BFGs - $1000
White Knuckle Sliders - $700

thoughts?

Assuming that your brother is also in the SoCal area/market, it seems like a fair price (assuming that there is no damage, issues, etc.). I just went on Cars.com and TRD Pros that aren't in the SoCal area are couple of grand cheaper. So I'd imagine with the "Cali Markup", that $39K is to be expected.

yeh as tacorunn mentioned, the cali markup is intense. Not sure about the rest of the US, but 4R, GX, 100/200 series inventory are LOW. Everyone is buying up overlanders and anything outdoorsy here in Cali. It's impossible to find an older Sprinter VAN at a decent price too. That, coupled with a dealer markup, I supposed $39k aint that bad. And my bro said the dealer ordered a new front bumper bc there is a little trail damage.

Thinking about it, TRD Pro came with 265s stock so with it coming with 275 BFGs is pretty good.

I think he is going to buy it. Too bad everything is on fire here in Cali so we will have to find somewhere creative to go wheel. =]

That’s an awful deal. There’s not a single thing special or worthy of a real price increase about a pre 2019 pro if you’re not trying to get something like inferno.

I bought a brand new 2019 ORP w/ KDSS with 1 mi, one state over from you for $39k last year. I don’t know how anyone could be talked into spending that on a 4 year old used 4runner with a decent amount of miles.

If you're not getting a TRD Pro specific color then i'd say no, not worth it. You would be better off buying a newer TRD OR with less miles and then you customize as you see fit. I mean that's my 2 cents, so take if for what it's worth. The reason to buy a Pro is for the color first, and second if you aren't wanting to do aftermarket suspension mods.

Exactly. You could have a brand new TRD Off-Road Premium or Venture for only $1 or 2k more and have essentially the exact same truck. Those mods aren't worth that much.

Not worth it IMO. I just bought my '16 Trail Premium w/KDSS, 100% stock with 97K miles (perfect carfax, 2 owners, all highway miles) for $29.9K. Had it shipped from CO to CA for $600 (and dealer pitched in 50% so I only paid $300 shipping).

I wouldn't do that deal. That's a lot of money for a 5 year old 4runner.

unless its a pro specific color, no. and like others have said, pre 2019, the pro was a down grade form the ORP with the exception of color.

But what does he plan on using it for? is he going to offroad it? lots of sand? big tires like 34+ ?

If he is, either an ORP or sr5 P might be better options. Like an sr5P with a regear, front and rear air lockers, lift, bmc and 34s will be more off road capable than a stock pro while still having a 3rd row seat option and be cheaper.

you can add crawl to an SR5 for about a grand, but honestly my friends with trails/ Offroads an pros use it one and then wish they had a sunglasses holder.

the one thing that a trail or offroad offers is kdss... which seems like the best reason to get a trail or offroad, premium or otherwise.

Yes, the pro and trail / Offroad do have rear lockers, but I believe they take 1/2 a wheel turn to engage / disengage. so if you put it in reverse, you need one full wheel revolution to re lock your diff.... which could be a problem on a steep hill climb. Air lockers have issues with seals, however regular use and frequent diff oil changes will extend the seal life.

so yeah, depending on what he;s going to do with it... will determine what trim makers sense.... but IMO, not $40K for a 2016 pro
