Newbie 2020 ORP Build

I just bought a 2020 4Runner Off Road Premium. The car will be my wife’s daily driver and our recreation vehicle for camping and overlanding now that we’ve moved to Colorado.

I wanted the all terrain controls of the Off Road with the creature comforts of the Premium model for my wife. Toyota Safety Sense and Apple Car play we’re welcome additions for this model year.

General Plan:
Leave suspension stock unless I reach a point where weight from accessories requires upgrade and lift. Ultimately would like a RTT but finances limiting at moment.

Newbie 2020 ORP Build

Stock - blank canvas. Only addition is the weathertech bumper guard. Mostly to discourage rocks from hitting windshield. Happened to me twice in the two months I’ve lived in CO from TX. Not sure why it’s so much worse here, maybe the off road tires on everyone’s cars hold and kick up more pebbles?

The first thing I did was swap out the floor mats for the Weathertech HP Floor Liners. I have the original weather techs in my 2008 RAV4 and they look great after 12 years. I went with the HP mats despite them being slightly more expensive because they are slightly lower profile and have a more stock look. Extremely pleased with the fit and finish.

Next easy upgrade was to add a recovery point to the tow hitch, mostly to discourage people from backing up too close in parking lots.

Went with the motormic shackles hitch from Amazon because of the included locking pin. Several friends have had hitches removed in parking lots and just didn’t want to have to worry about it.

Other things included are my HiPoint jack, recovery kit (hand winch until bumper and winch can be installed), recovery traction boards, small shovel ($8 harbor freight), and camping staples like a small hatchet and saw which typically live in the trunk. Still waiting on the Canvasback trunk liners to arrive. Liked the low profile and seat back covering these provide over the flimsy stock trunk mat or even the weathertech trunk liner.

Based on reviews and the consumer report ratings of the OEM tires, and the proximity of CO winter I knew that I would be changing out the tires. I wanted to size up to 275/70R17 and knew the added weight would impact mileage long term. We plan on owning this car until it dies so it made sense to upgrade to lighter aluminum TRD SEMA wheels. The off road performance and looks are just a side benefit.

Bought the TRD SEMA wheels on Amazon $200 even each, got 5 to have a fully interchangeable spare.

The wheels I decided on are BFG K02s in 275/70R17. Unoriginal but they just seem to work for so many people and I didn’t need to get too fancy.

Installation done by Big O tires here in Denver for $70 total. Below is OEM tread compared to K02.

After install. Really changes the looks of the vehicle. Ride is a bit tougher at certain speeds, really only noticeable above 65 mph. Ride quality is quite good.

275/70/17s DO RUB AT MAX TURN!!!! The forums debate this back and forth. There is no issue with most daily driving but at max turn (notice it most when backing out of driveway) they definitely rub. Just in case anyone was considering this I wanted to register my experience because the internet was equivocal when I reviewed the forums.

Just got some new parts in:

This Warn won’t be able to go on until the C4 Fab Low Pro Bumper with High Bull bar arrives (fingers crossed it doesn’t interfere with Toyota Safety Sense).

Prinsu No Drill Full Roof Rack also arrived. Wanted the Gobi stealth but couldn’t afford it. With this my moonroof will be minimally useful. Wandering if I can position the crossbars so that I can still enjoy the moonroof- at least until I can get the RTT.

One of my favorite additions so far is this Toyota OEM console safe. Really nice to be able to throw valuables in there when going for a hike. I also keep my ham radio faceplate in there when it’s not in use.

Easy install. Genuine Toyota part. Perfect fit. Highly recommended.

Finally got the Canvasback liner for the trunk and back of the rear seat. The factory mat wasn’t really doing what I needed and I also worried about long term durability.

Debated the Canvasback vs weathertech trunk liner for a while. Ultimately decided to give these a try as they are thinner and easier to work around. Pleased so far. Went with black with normal sticking. If I could do it again I’d get red stitching to match the rest of the vehicle.

Do you happen to have the part number for this?

Looks good man, I'm right behind you on a ORP (getting in Thursday).
I'll be reading this thread and taking notes.

Ohhh, first time I'm seeing the Canvasback and I like it. Can you a full view of the canvasback without stuff in the trunk or the trunk cover? Also, is this the Black color or Graphite color listed on their site?

Definitely going to order this for my '16.

Congratulations on your new 4Runner! If you ever find the need to upgrade simple things like bump stops or even help managing sag in the rear when loaded up let us know. We are always here to help and answer any questions you may have. Again congratulations and happy overlanding!

Working on the Prinsu no drill rack. Note to others, it doesn’t come with the torx bit required for the screws. It also no longer comes with the weatherproofing strips for the roof (instructs you to cut and repurpose the factory ones) or the front wind strip (disappointing for $900 that they charge an extra $15 for a price of rubber tubing. Poor show).
