Did the dealer use inferior or maybe the wrong oil?

1) The engine was pretty quiet off when my T4R was new from dealer lot.

2) After the first "free" dealer oil change, I noticed the engine was louder and making tapping noises during acceleration right after driving out of the dealer shop. The paperwork did list 0W-20 oil.

3) Skipped the 2nd "free" dealer oil change and changed the oil myself due to Covid. I used Mobil 1 0W-20 and the engine is quiet again. No more tapping noises. Even my wife noticed it seemed quieter without me telling I did an oil change.

Hopefully no major damage was done with the dealer oil and the engine noises.

I can't imagine 5w-30 instead of 0w-20 would make engine loud but who know what those techs are capable of screwing up. Don't worry about it, just DIY next time. Old man used to say: "If you want it done right - do it yourself".

That is weird. I know that a dealer once didn't use synthetic and it didn't seem any different when they did.

Well guaranteed they used bulk oil from who knows where, I doubt they put anything in that wasn't spec'd for your truck. Go over to BITOG and read more than you ever wanted to know about how same weights have different additives.

Regardless it would have to be some thick oil to make your truck sound strange.
