We have a 2014 Nissan Altima and a 2019 Nissan Murano, and remote start on both of them works as follows: After remote starting the vehicle you unlock and enter the vehicle (the vehicle remains runing). To drive off you have to put your foot on the brake pedal and push the start button on the dash. The instrument cluster lights up and you can drive. Compared to the 4runner, it is smoother (engine doesn't turn off), but the exact same movements. I personally think that it is not a big deal, especially since 5 minutes ago I didn't know that I could use the key fob.

My wife's Taco won't. Unlock the doors and it shuts off. So tell us how they got around the "safety feature" because I may be interested in doing it to her Taco. I've got a keyed 4R, so no worries, I'll add a Accessorides kit and not worry about it.

As the previous post indicated with the Nissan, many manufacturers build remote start units with that sequence but Toyota doesn't play that way from what I understand (keyed ignition or not). My installer (friend) gets asked this in his business all the time but its always the same answer with the OEM Toyota sequence, any door opens and off goes the engine.

So that's why I went with the Viper product. Have to carry another very small remote but its no big deal to me. Viper uses the same security sequence though, any door opens, hood, remote window command down etc. and off goes the engine, you must use one of the fobs to unlock the vehicle and then put it into run mode with the ignition (cannot touch brakes either of course).

I'm not aware of this Accessorides kit you refer to though. Whats that?

Oh wow, I guess my 2016 trail premium has the remote start. Like everyone else here, as soon as I go to unlock it shuts off the engine. However, I can see use cases for this while in the snow. Stay warm in the cabin while the truck heats up outside for a bit.

That's because, as mentioned above, it only works on higher trim 4Runners.

PTS 4runners shut down with door open, including Viper and Compustar and of course OEM.

Hmm, could be right - not sure if Toyota has done something to prevent that but my installer buddy has put the Viper products into my friends PTS cars and they don't do that... the product does default to that value but they can be programmed for push to start vehicles otherwise (button must be pushed to the ignition on selection after door unlock). Or technically you could still start it with all of the doors open too if its programmed to ignore that as well, but any brake pedal depression and off goes the engine. The security sequence always begins with pressing door unlock and having the prox fob present so its impossible to get the vehicle into drive in any manner.

Unsure how you would exit and leave it running to jet into a store I'll have to ask them... Presumably press the auto start button when you pull up and put into park, press ignition off before opening the door then exit and lock the vehicle. On mine its programmed as such (press remote start, remove ignition key - then open the door, close it and must lock it too otherwise the sequence isn't completed and it turns off after 30 seconds), it will only run for 5 mins on that sequence but remote starting otherwise gives you 10 mins before it shuts off again (time period also programmable).

I ran the question up the food chain years ago as to why most any manufacturer remote start and stays running when you open a door (push button start). Number one answer was stupid people who get in, drive to wherever, shut engine off and find themselves stranded because the damn key is still at home

Is this just a random option that shows up on some models depending on the year? I have a 2019 Limited and it doesn't appear to have this feature.

It's not programmable, it's a Toyota/Lexus thing roughly 2002 and up. The firmware driving the remote start bypass is just expoiting the OEM start feature in the BCM.

There are other vehicles out there that do not shut down that are PTS. Nissan, Honda depending on firmware, Hyundai/Kia, etc.

Below is an example of a Viper system straight out of an install guide for 4Runner PTS:

2019 Pro and 2019 Limited in Seattle, no dice. Too bad.

Does anyone know if this can be installed at the dealer? While I know there are aftermarket systems that people love, for me not having to carry a second fob is more important than the engine shutting off when you open the door.

I may be spending time in a much colder place this winter, so would be a nice thing to have given how slowly the 4Runner heats up IMO.

NO this is not true for the 2020 SR5 premium and down! I researched it, and it is not available for these models. It starts with the Limited and above. SO, it does not matter what you do with the key fob, it will not work. There is not anything available as of yet for the 2020 model. NOT YET...........
