Need help on diagnosing a sound on a GX460. Please Help!

Hello all,
I know this isn't a Lexus forum, but I know that the GX is very similar to the 4Runner. I also know how active this forum is! I am hoping you can help me! Here is what is happening:

I have a 2013 GX460 with 70,000 miles on it. It's a daily driver and does not go offroad. I am getting a thumping noise when turning at very low speeds. I can sometimes feel it in the steering wheel. (Tapping) Even while driving straight. It comes and goes. It is consistent in the steering while turning hard at slow speeds. I was thinking this is a cv joint or wheel bearing. The CV Joint on the driver side does not have any cracks in the boot and a bearing seems a little premature at this mileage. Before I replace the cv joint, has anyone had a similar problem?

does the thumping sound rotational? like in time with wheel speed? Do you feel it most when turning either direction, left and right?

Yes, it is in sync with the tire rotation at slow speed. It also seems to make the sound at the same point in the steering. When I turn the wheel at slow speed all the way to the left or right.

BTT

Do you think I should go ahead and replace the CV joint?

Another possibility is a cracked brake rotor. Good luck!

To OP: that is a strange one… I am guessing CV or wheel bearing can cause that, but I would think if one of them are causing thumping noise at the low speed you would hear it and feel it in other conditions as well… and with wheel bearing that bad, you probably would be able to feel the “play” on the wheel when that wheel is off the ground.

Also, wheel bearing failure are normally most pronounced with turning one direction (left or right) and almost non- detectible when turning the other direction…

So let me ask you some stupid questions: are you sure that front suspension bolts are tight (cam bolts-LCA) , no worn parts (with big play) like ball joint, steering end links, no broken spring (s), no damaged bushings, etc...? and the last one… are all lug nuts on wheel(s) are tight?

I would make sure that your alignment cam bolts are tightened to spec.
