Any issues disconnecting the battery?

I am following guide to install the OEM Audio+ speakers and one of the first steps is to disconnect the battery - am I going to have any issues doing this? Anything in the infotainment or other sensors going to trigger/get reset as a result?

No issues. I disconnected mine a few times and never noticed anything.

I've had the ground strap off of my wife's 2014 4R a number of times.

The first time you start the vehicle after reconnecting ground, the engine may stumble on first start attempt. Normal.

Mine always fires right up after the 2nd try.

You may need to resync your windows after disconnecting the battery. Not hard at all to do. Search around here for a how-to.

You may need to re-set your your power windows.

How To Fix 4runner Automatic Windows After Replacing Battery - YouTube

I disconnected my battery and and spent a week chasing gremlins until I did the reset.

That's... an interesting gotcha! Looks straightforward enough and good to know if it ends up happening to me

If you want to watch the YT video - fine, but fast-forward 3 mins into it - skip all of the useless gibberish up front.

Here's a text write-up I put on an Avalon section at toyotanation.com awhile back. Pretty much the same across all models as far as I can tell. Worked on the wifes '14 4R and my '15 Tacoma.

Anytime the battery terminal has been disconnected, please initialize the driver’s door
power window and front passenger’s door power window after reconnecting the
battery terminal.

With ignition switch in the “ON” position, do the following:

1. Push down and hold the driver’s door power window switch to completely open
the window.
2. Pull and hold up the driver’s door power window switch until the window closes.
Continue holding the switch for approximately one second until the switch changes
from blinking to a constant illumination.
3. Check for proper operation of the “one–touch open and close” function by fully
pushing the switch briefly to the “DOWN” and “UP” positions.

At this time the power window switch for the passenger’s door window should
be blinking.
4. Push down and hold the passenger’s door power window switch to completely open
the window.
5. Pull and hold up the passenger’s door power window switch until the window closes.
Continue holding the switch for approximately one second until the switch changes
from blinking to a constant illumination.
6. Check for proper operation of the “one–touch open and close” function by fully
pushing the switch briefly to the “DOWN” and “UP” positions.

Sunroof initialization is similar.

I believe the video shows the guy doing the back window the same way the fronts are done you may have to do that I just checked all five of mine and all went up and down with a single push of the button I only recall resetting my front windows I rarely have anyone in the back and hardly ever lower the rear window

You guys had to reprogram windows? I removed my battery without issues when installing my OEM Audio system. Just remember that it may stall during the first start.

There is supposed to be a backup battery for all the settings, not sure how long it lasts, but mine has remembered all the settings when I've changed batteries.

Either way, disconnecting the battery before doing any electrical work is a good idea. Since there are both switched and non switched circuits that share fuses; it's the only way to insure an accidental action doesn't cause problems. Sure you can check with a meter; but disconnecting the battery is the safest way. It can get expensive if you're not careful as a few previous threads will attest to.

I had to, as the first step, disconnect the battery (negative terminal only) prior to starting the steps to remove/upgrade my fog-lights a few weeks ago. This ensures I couldn't accidentally activate, for example, the airbag sensors. After the upgrade, reconnected the negative terminal and no issues. Mine is a 2019.

Done it a ton of times and never even heard of resetting the windows until now. LOL

The truck will stall after you first start it up but will be fine on the second time. No matter how many times it happens it still causes momentary panic.

Ya, it's the strangest thing and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it happening. I've disconnected my battery a bunch of times for various reasons and never had the issue. Last month I disconnected the battery to install LED interior lights. The install took me about an hour (the map lights were a ***** to get out). After I reconnected the battery my drivers side window would roll up half way and stop and the passenger rear window wouldn't roll down from the driver controls. I was racking my brain until I ran across a post on this forum that explained the procedure.

windows dont work after battery change

Auto window roll down feature stopped working
