Firestone CoilRite airbag install, part #4135

This install was on my 2019 TRDORP and necessary to provide some assist when towing my 2200# camper. The tongue weight would cause the rear to squat just enough to lighten up the front end. Looked into the Timbren bump stops and airbags and, for the price - $85 shipped vs $200 for the timbren bumpstops, it was a no-brainer.

Install was pretty straightforward and took a couple of hours and a few beers.

1. Jack the vehicle from the pumpkin and high enough so that when lowered on jack stands, the suspension will fully sag with the tires off the ground.

2. Pull tires and unbolt lower shock mount bolt and driver’s side pan hard bar bolt.

3. In my case, I have KDSS, so with some support under the diff, loosen and remove the 4 14mm bolts on the two brackets of the swaybar attached to the KDSS, not the bracket holding the swaybar to the diff.

4. The springs will slide right out once the KDSS swaybar is released.

5. Remove the bumpstop from top of spring and with a sawzall, cut the bumpstop - from the bottom, count up 4 sections and cut above the 4th.

6. Slide the FireStone airbag into the coil, slip the included hose thru the bumpstop and attach to the bag. Do the same for the other side.

7. Reinstall springs ensuring they’re seated correctly in the seats.

8. Pass the air hose up thru the spring perch and route to your desired spot. Attach with zip ties.

9. I put my air valves on the top of my rear bumper on each side. They’re protected from the elements and out of the way of the door.

10. Reattach KDSS brackets.

11. Reattach lower shock bolts.

12. Reattach panhard bar bolt. This one is tough as the axle will shift left about 1/4-3/8” when that bolt is removed. You’ve got to get it lined up correctly with some leverage to get the bolt in and threaded.

13. Chk that bags will hold air pressure.

14. Wheels on and button it all up.

Looking forward to towing again with this add-on. Also, I found it gave me much more room to work to drop the spare tire.

Nice write-up.

I went through similar steps when I installed my Airlift bags. I know the directions on Airlift call for cutting 4 sections off of the bumpstop, but the picture is different in instructions then what our actual bumpstops so I only cut 3 sections off to match the thickness of bumpstop shown in picture. Perhaps Firestone's are different in that regard.

Having just completed installing a new suspension a couple months, it is much easier to reinstall rear KDSS brackets/swaybar with the car on the ground or you risk cross-threading trying to line it up. Don't as me how I know this! It was a pain to get ordered from dealer the correct bolts as one stripped in the process. It took then 3 tries to get me the bolts I needed.

Good vid and good tips. I did not drop my truck to the ground but did use a floor jack in the same method as was used on the front. The hydraulic side (drivers) went in fine but the fixed arm was tough to thread the bolts back in despite having the clamp in place and lined up. It went back together ok but took a lot of force to thread the bolts back in.
