Easiest Grill Mounts for Light Bar?

So I had a big issue needing more light for mountain driving. Did the 9011 plus upgraded low beams to GE Nighthawks, and got Diode Dynamics SS3 fogs about to get installed. Now tempted to get a dang light bar just because... but don’t want to have to take off the bumper or grill.

It seems the KC mounts you don’t have to? $300+ for their 20” LED bar and mounts.

Rough Country has a $150 20” light bar but can’t find reviews on 4runner Forums for it. Wondering if the quality is good enough for half the price of KC to just go with it? And use the KC moment hl

And has anyone used the IDJM upper grill mounts and light?? It’s super cheap and seems like it would be easy install. But I can’t find any reviews on searches.

2014-19 Toyota 4Runner Behind Upper Grille LED Light Bar Kit — iJDMTOY.com

And I’ve read so many threads that say don’t go generic cheaper LED bars.... and others that say they’re fine with cheaper eBay or Knock off brands.

My audio/tint/light place can get cheap off brand LED bars and customers claim they last For years no issues.

I don’t do hard core wheeling so not gonna beat the snout outta a light bar.

Thanks

I had the same feeling as you about not wanting to take the bumper off. A fellow 1 block away from my work has a great body shop reputation and I asked him if he would install them. I agreed for $150 cash. Great deal imho
I got the double bar CsliRaidsed and am super please with them.
He even installed my raptor lights

I wired it to an sPod which is fantastic

Good luck!

I don’t know what year 4runner you have. I have a bajadesigns 20 inch led bar going on my 2020 Pro behind the upper grille. It will work and you need to get the mounts also. I did not add it yet. Holding off because I have a NFab mount for adding lights on it behind my grille where the safety sense is. I might add one each bajadesigns LP4’s but I will need to pull the bumper. But if I don’t I won’t need to pull the bumper. That’s a easy mount to do. Hope this helps.

How do you like the nFab mount? Did you get the multi-mount channel or single? I've been considering this mount with a pair of LP6s.

I believe it’s the multi mount. I have not installed it yet because I’m not sure if I’m going to use it. There is another guy in the other 4runner site added 2 LP4’s one on each side of the safety sense. He told me about this mount. Also he said not to get the Rago mount he said he tried it and no good. He said this mount is better. Also mentioned he was going to go with the 6’s but thought they were to tall and would cause to much back lighting into the grille. That’s also why I might add the 4’s. With the led bar and the 4’s would be a killer at night. Hope this helps.

To OP: I am thinking about adding LED lights (bar) and considered name brand vs. generic as well as placement of lights on 4Runner…

IMHO: installing LED lights behind the grill will impact light output… I could not find the exact info that would allow me to quantify the loss, but my “educated” guess (considering 4Runner grill pattern and especially with flood\spot LED pattern), I believe that loss is at least 30 %... which is significant… In addition, I do not like the idea that I have no way of cleaning the lens well if it is behind the grill.

I also do not want to have large contraption (sort of light mount) added to the front of the truck… nor I want to have a large and bulky double row LED bar… yes, I know I am very picky…

All above have led me to idea of purchasing small and light LEDs lights or bar and attach it directly to the grill… I am still thinking which one to go with, but here is one option I am leaning towards: Amazon.com: AutoFeel LED Light Bars 2PCS 5 Inch 6000LM LED Pods Single Row Spot Flood Combo Beam Driving Fog Off Road Lights for Truck ATV UTV Boat: Automotive

My $0.2

I've been checking out that thread too, and have been looking to maybe do something similar on my 2020. I'll definitely be interested to hear if you do end up using the NFab mount and how it works out for you.

If you do it soon please post pics and feedback. So you’re gonna mount into the plastic grill?

I just sold my squadron pro led fog lights. they go into the stock location and are more than bright enough for your needs. Easy install without having to remove the bumper and can be used with your stock light switch.

I do agree it might be better than pulling the front bumper off to put the LP4’s behind the grille. Those in amber to match my amber led bar probably be good. I had a Cali led white lens behind my 2015 Tacoma years ago and no issues with the lens getting dirty. You could still clean them off. I wish I did not have to stick my led bar behind the upper grille. But I don’t want to spend for a southernstyleoffroad bumper with a winch which I don’t need. You don’t have many options with the safety sense. I like the idea of the fog lights to go with the led bar. So you are saying the bajadesigns squadron fog lights are so much brighter the the factory led ones. The 2020 has the led fogs.

Sure, I will definitely post pics and feedback -not sure if that will be soon -maybe in the next 3-4 weeks, but I will post for sure.

My plan is to turn lights "upside down" and mount them to underneath portion of the horizontal (plastic) part (s) of grill... just not sure yet if it will be on the top or bottom portion of the grill, below is "poor" man photo shop of what I am thinking (and that is not my truck), and also what I meant by "upside down" light.

Do you have 20” or two 10”? Seems they have a 30” light bar and then two separate 10” light bars for the upper grill? I emailed asking if they’ll just sell the mounts... if so then I’d have to be careful to get two 10” light bars that fit their mounts hopefully

a single row 20 inch light bar will fit in the upper grill area without disassembling the bumper (other than removing the engine compartment splash guard and hood latch.).

If the lights come with a lo profile bracket (which most do now) you won't need to buy brackets either, unless you want to throw money away.

I went with cheapo lights because I only use it like .000000001% of the time. If you are off-roading, you won't outrun your lights most of the time (unless you are iron man stewart and running in the baja 1000)

Don’t wanna throw money away. So your saying most of the generic 20” lights come with mounts already that just happen to bolt directly to existing holes on the 4runner? Or you just drill where needed ?
