fixing pinstripes for sale?

unfortunately need to sell the 4runner I was planning on keeping for 20 years thanks to pandemic layoff. I used it as intended so it's pinstriped on both sides, plus has "happy farm dog trying to say hello through the window" dog claw marks on two doors.

anyone gotten pinstripes fixed for a sale? ideas on how much it will cost? I have requests out of quotes but it's taking a long time to get anything back from anyone.

I've used Griot's machine Polish, orange pads, and a Porter Cable random orbit polisher with very good results.

Wash, clay, polish, wax - the truck will look great.

It depends on how bad they are. My guess would be $300-$500 depending on the detailer. As mentioned above you can attempt to do it yourself for a lot less. You likely won't have the same results but you can certainly make the paint look better and hide the lines at certain angles.

I just did this recently. I used the standard compound from Griot's and wish I had used this. Possibly would have seen better results.

BOSS™ Fast Correcting Cream

- Griot's Garage

The main thing is to work in small areas and go over it a few times. The PREP work is the most important though. Clay bar, etc...

You can then choose to use a Carnuba wax or one of the synthetic offerings.

thanks. I worked in fabrication for a long time and paint/finishing was never my strong suit. I'd love to save some money but it may be worth it to pay someone else on this one.

This is with one pass of the buffer. Just shows what a little bit of work can do. You can still see the stripes but much less pronounced.

I think the image is a broken link. I don't see it either.

If you do buff yourself - watch some how-to videos. Start easy and be careful not to burn the clear coat or cut too deep into it.

The final result was pretty good. I just used an orange pad for buffing all of the Griot's Complete Compound and then a black for the wax. Buffed of with a different 10" orbital buffer. In-person you can still see them but yes it is a lot better! I hadn't done this in 5 years and boy did it show.

I agree with your advice on watching some YouTube videos. Lots of good info there.

So dumb question; how much can you recover something that looks like that with additional work?

To me that still looks pretty bad to be honest. I try to stay out of tight brush as much as possible though since I hate how easy it is to pin stripe trucks down in the Southwest (sometimes you have no choice though).

It really depends on how much effort you put into it. The initial photo showed 1 pass with a buffer and not the final result. Also only the upper section was done so you could clearly see the difference. That is over 5 years of AZ pinstriping. A professional could do much better. This is several hours of DIY work.

After

Before

Not the best photos just trying to make a quick reply while I could.

Gotcha; I can see the difference between the top and bottom now that I'm looking at it.
