As an example I tow a small camper - but it has a fairly high wind profile. Two weeks ago I went into a 25-30mpg headwind headed to southern Utah. For periods of time I was literally pedal to the floor and only able to maintain ~70mph WOT. I do have a medium size transmission aux cooler, but I never really thought it was necessary - mostly an extra precaution. I've never been able to get the temps on the transmission or engine to climb out of the typical operating ranges.

I can take random guess about the supercharger tune and the transmission's torque converter that has a intermediate "partially locked" option and where it might generate a lot of heat with more input torque than it thinks it's getting, but that's just a guess on my part. This might be a case where regearing the diffs could help reduce the torque in the transmission and lower temps.
Never thought of that. Didn't want to regear only because I'm already getting 11 MPG. But kind of makes sense that it may be only fix that's not a band aid... guess I know my next mod and it seems like I'm getting a front locker sooner than I thought now...

Keep in mind that I'm just observing that a few members have had issues with trans temp overheating and they've also had superchargers. So I'm making a pretty big jump of logic here that may have no relationship other than random luck. My guess is with your heavier load the regear would keep the torque converter locked up more often and generate less heat.

I don't know why the superchargers seem to be correlated with trans temps being high at idle or trail speeds. That points to something going on with high-idle rpms or something odd there. You're also not the first to have that issue.

But I'm also just random guessing on something that could cause a problem. You could also have just gotten your transmission cooler lines reversed or received a radiator with a constricted passage and you're not getting enough fluid flow.

I have the URD Whipple sc on my 4R and only time my trans warning light (too high of temp) has ever come on was during heaving winching where the truck was on and not moving on crazy steep inclines. otherwise never ever had an issue with trans temps being high before or after the install of the supercharger. Now maybe this is an issue in higher elevations which we do not have on east coast.

following your theory Jetboy, I regeared before the sc, so can't speak to it's effect or not.

I’ve never any issues with Transmission temp light coming when going up steep hills. I drove to and from Las Vegas with outside temps on the high 90s with my foot to the floor. The 4Runner pulled like a freight train with the SC. I’ve been wanting to add an external transmission cooler just for peace of mind. I’m pretty heavy myself with steel front and rear bumpers, steel skids, and heavy 295/70R17 KM3’s.

You could go all in and do a offroad trans cooler.
Race Ready Products > Cbr Large Off Road Cooler

Bypass the oem radiator.
Can get trans fluid thermostats/switch.

Whats the engine temps?
Was thinking lower the engjne temp with the 160* stat to lower overall temps.

Is some talk about a transmission cooler water mister over in the 4th gen section.

Was also thinking, you can get water wetter for the engine cooling.
Maybe help overall cooling transfer?

If I didn't have a scangauge I wouldn't ever have noticed my temps. Maybe I should get rid of the scangauge. Haha.
When I drained the radiator of transmission fluid when I did the supercharger and new radiator, it didn't seem to be very much oil. I really am debating pulling the lines from the radiator and running it direct to the aux cooler. I live in California I dont have an issue with my transmission being too cold.

Honestly I'd leave it in the system. Anything below normal operating temp is too cold. I've seen issues with people removing the OEM cooler circuit and there's no benefit to deleting it. Engine coolant is at lower temps than when you're working a tranny.

I would post any transmission question here Transmission- 5 Speed automatic write up with pics for second gen 4 liter trucks | Tacoma World as it is the same transmission as ours and the guy knows his stuff.

If you are hitting those temps, I would recommend a fluid exchange using the return line between the radiator and trans. Just remember to measure what you take out and put only that amount back
