Roof rack question

Prob been asked before...and I searched with no luck

Who has had a fabricated roof rack (custom). How did you mount?

Does anyone sell mounting rails that we can fabricate around for mounting to the roof?

Thanks in advance.

Just use the factory rack mounting locations located below the trim strips. You can use the instructions (PDF) for any 5th generation rack to see where they are and the hardware needed. You can find factory rails on Ebay for a good price. The only draw back to the factory rails and racks are they have a low weight limit, about 150 lbs. I'm sure the roof can take much more than that for I have see racks in remote locations that far exceed that weight.

From what I know the weak point of the factory rack is the crossbars, not the side mounts. Some upgraded crossbars can easily hold a tent on top.

True. Tents don't weigh much. What I referred to is in the African bush or desert you see large fuel bladders and heavy camping gear up on roofs that have to weight 500 lbs. Huge roll over hazard so you have to drive carefully, but the roof can hold it.
