4wd shifter - remove dial install lever?

So have & love the SR5, but MUCH prefer the Trail/TRD manual 4wd shifter to the dial.

Wondering is anyone has, or knows about, changing the shifter?

Just started cogitating about it...figure it would require removal of the electronics & actuator and purchase and install of the mechanical parts. But it might be a lot more complicated than that if say the computer is involved somehow.

Thoughts/comments if you please.

There is a big difference internal to the transfer case -- the shift rails and forks are different. Thus you would have to rebuild the transfer case, so it is really not possible. You can see what I mean by looking at the factory repair manual where they break down both types of transfer cases:

Yikes, a LOT more involved than it seems on the surface. Thanks for the reference.

Looks like I'll be using the dial....no sense spending $12k to change the shifter.

... if you're worried about it being 'reliable'... you're probably pretty safe. While I'm sure somebody will jump in and say otherwise, there doesn't seem to be a lot of owners here who have had trouble with the dial shifter not working as it should, even with a lot of miles and use. You're not likely to have a problem with it IMHO.

Good luck.

I use my "dial" regularly. That may be one reason I haven't had any problems with it.

Of all the drive by wire things on the 4R, I wouldn't worry about it.

Even the manual lever models still have the same electronic actuators to engage the front diff so it’s not an entirely mechanical system anyway.

It should be possible, the easiest way would be to get salvaged parts (transfer case, selector lever, any connection parts etc from a trail/pro).

As others have mentioned not really worth it but I don't think in the grand scheme it would be that hard to do.

I wonder what kind of electronic control module differences there are. You might need some different control modules potentially.
