Photos of Rooftop Cargo Boxes

I've looked through the search and didn't see too many photos.

Snowboarding season is soon approaching (well I hope, unlike last season) and I'm looking at purchasing a rooftop cargo box that will fit at least 4 boards and boots. Does anybody have pictures of theirs they can post? I've been researching the Thule and Yakima products. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

The only box I have experience with on the 4Runner is the Thule Ascent 1100. While I think its a great box and the price was right at the time it doesn't fit out rigs well. If you try to put it on the factory cross bars it will put too much weight on the shark fin and start to push the roof in. I had some Yakima cross bars and tried it with their rail grabbers and while it cleared the shark fin it was still too long even if placed all the way forward the rear spoiler would scrape when the tail gate was up. It was very solid the only two times it was used from the CT shoreline to VT and ME but I'm paranoid about ruining the spolier. I have it up for sale on craigslist and looking into the Yakima boxes as I've heard they have better clearance in the back. Also considering the packasport boxes as I've heard they last forever but they are pricey. I apologize if any of this doesn't make sense as beer and fireball may have gotten the best of me this evening.

Must not had enough beer and fireball (whatever that is), since everything you said made perfect sense. I would have linked your cragslist ad, however, so we could see which one you were talking about and for those of us who do not have the shark fin antennae, this might work well for us......be safe.

My 16 year old Thule Combi 600 (the biggest, baddest, double-walled box they ever made) finally kicked the bucket last season. So I figure a new ride deserves a new rack -- I'll be ordering a Packasport 115 within the next month or so and will definitely give a review.

Even without the shark fin I still don't think it is suitable due to the rear spoiler hitting it when the tailgate is up.

BTW fireball is horrible cinnamon flavored whiskey.

Someone has posted pics of a Yakima 16 box on a mag grey 5th gen. I have a Yakima 21 on my Sequoia. Looks great and functions well with one exception, the plastic hinges inside (one at each end) turn into pretzels in summer heat and fold over. Happened twice now when I've made summer trips to Florida. At least their customer service is good and they mail out new hinges free of charge. The box is two years old so maybe they've changed the design. It would likely fit on my 5gen but wouldn't be able to open the back hatch.

Here's a thread from a short while back, as it mentions I went with the Atlantis 1800. Glad we did - tons of room, more durable than the Ascent series; however, I would recommend the aftermarket Thule bars as well, you'll need it to clear the satellite radio fin (even though the fin is somewhat covered w/ the box the satellite radio reception is just fine).

Anyone try to fit a Yakima Skybox 18 or 21 on a 5th Gen?

Hope that helps.

I do not have satellite radio so I have no obstructions on the roof. Great recommendations so far. I really just need to see some in person.

Here is my Thule box on Yakima racks. Everything clears. Lift gate opens and it doesn't touch the shark fin. Don't know the part# for the box. All I know it's one of the bigger ones. Have to look to see what Yakima rack I have.

I bet if you hit up eastern mountain sports or another shop that sells racks they would let you throw some up on the roof for a test fit.

Thanks for replying mace. It did help in my situation. Can't the box be move forward enough to clear the spoiler when the rear gate gets opened? As to the "Horrible" cinnamon flavored whiskey, well, all I can say is WHY? If it that bad. Plenty of "GOOOD" whiskey out there.......be safe man.

Yeah I bought a basket there and they price matched a lower price with shipping that I had found online. They let me put it on the roof to check it out and offered to mount it but I'd rather do that myself.

Petty sure they'll beat EMS etc.

I'll have to head over there and check it out. Good to know they price match.
