Would you replace this tire?

Just noticed this side wall slice on my rear passenger tire. I can't see the belts and it hasn't leaked air. I have a a couple hundred miles of dirt roads coming up in a couple weeks where I'll be aired down. I'm on the fence but leaning towards replacing it. These KO2s have 18k on them and looks like they've worn about 4mm, I'd only replace one tire.

Considering your up coming trip I'd replace it. However, I'm kinda fanatical about tire condition especially when going on a trip.

That being said what's you're spare tire situation? Are you carrying a same sized same type tire in excellent condition? What type of trails will you be on? Would you even be able to change the tire in the conditions your getting into or get to the spare? Do you have a method of jacking your vehicle in those conditions? Airing the tire? Do you have a tire repair kit and the familiarity with it to use it if needed? There's a lot of variables unfortunately.

I’d replace it, maybe use it as a spare for low speed, off-road use. Sidewall damage can deteriorate quickly and catastrophically.

Good luck!

Thanks, think I was assuming it would stay the same but if sidewall damage deteriorates it has to go

Would tire certificates take care of that?

It looks like that dark area around the slice could indicate some separation under the surface. I'd replace it.

I wouldn't. I got this nice little cut (8mm deep) when this tire had about 500 miles on it a year and a half ago. I'm going to be replacing it soon for tread wear.

Looks like you cut the outer ply. You have two to go. I’ve sliced and diced my BFGs over the decades without failure.

But, I like the suggestion to use this one as a spare and buy a new replacement tire. Sounds like a win/win solution overall.

My general experience with sidwall cuts is that they'll give you a good amount of warning before going bad. Usually the tire will develop a pretty good bubble around the failure area before it actually blows out. To me it looks superficial. But it's hard to really see in a picture how deep it is. I'd probably run it. Maybe use it as a rear tire only if you're really worried about a blowout. Could make a good spare as well

Generally if you had cut any of the cords you'll see a bubble that looks like this: (and at that point it's time to replace the tire for sure)

If you're planning on airing it down and going on a remote adventure, I'd probably replace it unless you're in the mood for a tire change fire drill in unknown conditions.

Thanks guys, had an unused KO2 as a spare so swapped it out and kept it as the spare. Had to swap wheels - had the shop do that and they agreed with Jetboy Would you replace this tire?
