2010 4runner powertrain bumps at stop

Noticed this recently at random times, curious to what it is...

After coming to a full stop from a rolling position. Within a few seconds when the vehicle is fully stopped the back end of the vehicle lightly bumps/or shakes for a split second and everything is back to normal, feels like powertrain and its engaging or disengaging for some reason.

Does this have anything to do with the transmission or differential? is this considered normal behavior?

2010 trail kdss 3inch lift 285 tires.

Probably just the transmission down shifting into first gear. Sometimes it can take a fraction of a second to do that. If it is very slight, then I wouldn't worry about it. With that old of a vehicle, the universal joints in the drive shaft may be a bit loose, so have them inspected next time service is due.

This is a known issue going back to the last 4th gen 4Runner. Happened to my 2011 Trail shortly after purchase. Dealer fixed it years ago but it’s happening again now on mine as well.

Here’s a good thread for the 4th gen:

Drive shaft noise or U joint noise (LEXUS 4/06 TSB page 18) aka Driveshaft thump/bump

Greasing the slip joints on the drive line fixes it for awhile- been dealing with it for years on my 2011 FJC.

My 4th gen did that frequently and I could never get it to go away.

Axle wrap and it's been an issue with toyota pickups, tacomas, and 4runners since the 1st gen. Just google "Toyota Axle Wrap", you'll find plenty of forums talking about it.

AFAIK axle wrap only occurs on leaf spring suspensions- which the 5th gen 4R doesn't have.

Grease the slip yoke and it will go away for a few months.

There was a TSB for this where they replaced my rear driveshaft on my 2010 limited and on my 2011 trail.
