Part mode is fun, the kids get a kick out of it. Sounds pretty weak with it off, sounds pretty good with it on. I have it on all the time unless we are on a road trip and I put the speakers all the way to the front so the kids can do other stuff in the back. :-)

+1 on the soft close, auto climate control on all models, secret squirrel storage space, and the "twist and release" ignition.

Those said, for me, the biggest quirk of all was the accelleration difference between my '08 and the new '20. The 4th gens just have more throttle response so I had to get a Sprint Booster to get that 4th gen feeling back. ;)

I'm shocked they did away with the twist and release ignition and the soft close hatch. Those were amazingly detailed features that really impressed me.

Significant safety system upgrades (automatic highbeams, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert and I believe automatic emergency braking) was the big thing, plus there was somewhat of a modernization done to the vehicle info system display in the center of the dashboard controls.

Can't think off the top of my head if they did anything else or not comparing my 2020 to my 2016.

Another question: is there a difference between the breaks on any of the 5th gen 4runners? ie would the 2018 sr5 have a different break setup than the offroad?

pardon my ignorance, trying to learn about 5th gens. My replacement will either be a 3rd gen or a 5th gen. ( not a fan of 4th gen) I was doing some reading and read that some models had locker rear ends. What years and models had lockers ?

@3bears the 2010-2016 Trail editions have a rear locker, the 2017-2021 TRD Off Road have a rear locker (KDSS is option on both these trucks), and the TRD PRO has the rear locker.

The rear locker and KDSS were NOT an option on any SR5 or Limited truck. Also, just to clarify as I saw a post mentioning carplay, this feature became available on the 2020 4Runners with the updated head unit.

thanks for the info. Mostly what I see for sale up here is SR5's. I like lockers. Was able to retrofit one into my 3rd gen, I would assume you can retro fit them into a 5th gen...

Yes you could retrofit, but at the cost/effort, I'd just look a bit more for a TRD or Trail edition. Then you would also get the crawl control mode and a manual shift transfer case.

Unless you're planning to re-gear and go air lockers or something similar, then build out the SR5. Really just depends on end goal wants/needs. For me, I knew I didn't NEED a locker but wanted one. I also knew if I bought a SR5 I would likely never install a locker, so that was selling feature #1 for a TRD. Secondly, I drove 4Runners with and without KDSS. Personally the KDSS is what finally convinced me to purchase a 4Runner; I was very hesitant on buying one without KDSS.

On the 4th gens, there's a 'hidden' storage spot on the inside of the glove box.
Glove box hidden compartment trick!

I badly miss the automatic climate controls, soft close tailgate, and the secret glove box...

...other than those, my 5th Gen is far superior to my 2003 Sport Edition 4WD (the only year they had a 4 speed transmission)

True on it being very expensive. Just got it done last month. OEM glass with recalibration was $1,209 through Safelite. Thankfully insurance paid for all but the $500 deductible. My previous windshield replacement 15yrs ago was in the 200's

Seat material change?

Just found this thread and i wonder if anyone has compared the fabric used in the 2010 Trail Edition 4runners to the 11-13 models? Toyota's part number for the 2010 driver's seat cushion cover was 71072-35360-C2 and this is of course discontinued. Starting with the 2011 the part number is 71072-35360-C3.

I'm asking because the seam on mine has worn out a bit and is starting to show the cushion below. I'd love to replace it if possible vs trying to repair the fabric.
