I just got into a 21' 4runner, TRD ORP, having previously owned a 2000, then 2008 V8, and now a 5th gen, I have found the T4R community is dedicated to the yota product.
With T4R at the top of reliability rankings, popular as f*ck, and with currently high resale values, I think you are good to go. I see gas prices affecting your resale more than a 6th gen or any other manufacturer coming up with a competitive product, there is NO competition for the 4runner PERIOD.
In my area, a 5-year-old 5th gens with ~40K miles sell for the mid 30's, just insanity. I know I could have sold my V8 for more money privately but the trade-in I was offered, and the sales sticker the dealer put on the V8 was ridiculous. So with that said, regional differences obviously exist as well.

Maybe lose some resale value for novelty buyers who only keep their cars for 2-3 years.
If the Tacoma is any indicator of Toyota’s tendencies, I am not too worried about the next generation 4Runner.
Also, the 5th gen has been on the market for so long; the global spare parts bin and aftermarket support is going to keep them appealing. At least, this is why I went with such a ubiquitous platform. Novelty wears off quick, especially for unproven depreciating assets.

Doubtful values will drop much. Look at the 2nd gen tacos vs. 3rd gens. Newer everything doesn't necessarily translate into better everything. Plus the 5th gens have a strong following and I doubt that would drop off significantly.
I also don't like the trend of new vehicle pricing. You can bet we'll see a nice price jump with an all-new 6th gen. Toyota bumped up pricing on the 2020's and 2021's by $3k over the 2019's on an old platform with only a few safety and infotainment upgrades. Who know's what an all-new platform, exterior/interior, drivertrain, etc... may bring. A gently used 5th gen ORP for $30'sk may be a bargain for most compared to a $48k+ 6th gen ORP. Plus with its built in aftermarket support, I bet the 5th gen will continue to be the Toyota SUV of choice for most offroaders and overlanders for awhile.

Toyota has always done right by their owners in two ways. Both Toyota and Lexus hold their value extremely well because they are dependable and the model refreshes are so far and few between. The 6th gen won't hurt the 5th too much. Maybe 5-10% less? Maybe. Think about a BMW. By the time you get that thing off the lot they are following it with an updated redesigned model. Couple that with the lack of reliability and your resale value takes a crap.
As for the Jeeps. I had a Recon. Heavily modified. Loved it. Slow, aerodynamics of a brick. Wheeled all over Southern Nevada, Southern Utah, and Southeast California. That thing could do things I wasn't willing to do. There is no way my 4Runner could do some of what that Jeep could. Not even close. That new V8 JLU is going to be just stupid awesome, however... I know first hand, wheeling a 50K+ Jeep for a lot of people is hard. You worry about every scratch, dent and ding. I'll be picking up a TJ or LJ in the next year or so. Going to weld in a full cage and then proceed to ensure every panel is dented, dinged, scratched, or mangled. I honestly HATE all the new JLUs out there with ass tons of money dumped into them. Bunch of douche canoes who worry about their rims being scratched.

To your original question, I think it depends on how desirable the 6th gen is. It will no doubt be a turbo IL-4 so it better be a badass in most respects and continue to address the off-road prowess of previous 4Runners. If it doesn't then older 4Runners will appreciate, if it's a world-beater then older 4Runners may suffer in resale.

I bought my 2022 in August, and unless the 6th gen is a total dud, I think the resale value on the gen 5’s will go way down.

Yes. I was going to order 2023 OR in couple months but now I think I’ll wait to see what the next gen is going to be like.
My 2007 Camry was new gen year and had issues and poor fit and finish. Wife’s RAV4 was new gen and the hybrid battery died twice in 6 months for no reason.
New gen will have some issues to deal with.

since i tend to drive vehicles into the ground, i dont buy with resale in mind, although it is nice that toyota's depreciate pretty slow.
I try to avoid high maintenance vehicles in the first place.

My 2012 has 130K, plan to get to 300K before considering something else.

Is there any confirmation (or even believable rumors) that a 6th gen is coming soon? Seems like this discussion happens every year and Toyota does a minor 'refresh' every 5-7 years on the existing platform.
