Did you just wire it for the compressor (no lockers)? Is the ignition wire into the switch just for the switch to work? I understand that the car should be on, so this is just a safety precaution? That is what I interpret from the wiring diagram.

The line to ignition is just so the compressor can only run if the car is on, regardless of switch position.
If you ran this to unswitched power, or direct to the battery, it would be able to run without the engine running (bad)
The illumination line is for the light in the switch itself. If hooked to the dash illumination circuit, the little light will only come on when the dash is illuminated.
Easy move here is the splice the Dash illum and ignition lines together, and then tie into ignition switched power.
When done, the switch will illuminate when the car is on, and the compressor will only function if the engine is on.
EDIT: USE THE RELAY. Most little toggle switches aren't going to handle 40A for long, or at all.
