A honest to god question about roof racks.
Does a good one exist for under 1k or even under 800 bucks. I am almost done with my build, I just need to install my 3 inch lift and UCA, get tires 285's I hope that fit, and a roof rack and sliders.

You can get into a ARB roof rack for that kind of money

What are your needs? I would ask yourself that. Most people i see with aftermarket roof racks don't ever put anything on them. Go from there and you might find your answer pretty quick.

I'm very happy with my 7/8th LFD rack for less than $600. My main uses are to mount traction boards, awning, thule box, and occasionally some firewood and things up there.
I don't understand why people spend crazy money on a roof rack. It's all about what you're going to use it for unless you're just out for "the look."

l paid $400 plus $115 shipping for a new, take off, TRD OEM roof rack. The lady that was selling it didn't know what she had. But you can usually find the TRD roof racks on Ebay for about $600 to $800.
There is a company that sells on Ebay that makes a TRD clone for about $500.
Theoretically, you can buy a new one from the dealer, part number PT278-89190, but the factory refuses to ship them to the dealer unless you can prove it is going on a TRD Pro, like providing the VIN of a registered vehicle: PT278-89190 - Genuine Toyota TRD PRO Roof Rack Kit

On a side note, if you want additional cross bars for the TRD roof rack, they are now available from your dealer or online, part number PT278-89190-CB. The list price is $81.57, but I bought two from parts.toyota.com for $58.85 which includes free shipping to your local Toyota dealer.

as someone who has had a prinsu for 3 perfect years...do the LFD crossbars that utilize the OEM rack. Mutant nailed it.
Aesthetically? thats a different story. i love how ours looks which is why its stayed on even though its rarely ever used. No shame lol

Like the above said, its based off your needs...
If you just want to attach some recovery boards or a roof top tent, then a basic aluminum flat rack all go for under $1,000, see LFD or Prinsu, Victory, etc etc
If you want a basket to store wood, small items, coolers, bowling balls, whatever... most go for under $1,000.. see Yakima, Baja Designs, etc etc
If you want a mesh basket but also want to put a RTT on top, the best of both worlds so to speak...that’s the one that costs you close to $2k, and Gobi is one of the few, if not the only one, in that niche market and that’s what people usually go for because they want that cargo stability and RTT capability....all those flat rats wont be able to handle any cargo that isn’t overland “attached” specific like maxtrax boards and hi lift jack, any cargo that’s not apart of that, lol good luck keeping it up there.

Don't question it. Everyone needs a rack to go to the mall or put even a blanket up there. Only time anyone should need a rack is if they actually pack boxes up there or are mounting a tent that needs one. Unfortunately social media dictates that the stock rack is incapable of doing anything beyond being mounted to the truck. lol

I’m not knocking as I’ve seen this application working for many in the wild; but it’s insane to see a daily-driver equipped with a 100lb steel rack sandwiched by another 100lb rooftop tent.
I admit, I am drawn to the visual appeal of a rack, but after a few trips in the wild, I realized it was just a mental laundry list and my urge to look the part.

I made my own from 80/20 for about $300. It's not a full rack but very functional.
