Just as a data point- I've driven with the read out on 0-miles for maybe an extra 20 miles before hitting a gas station. Can't say how much fuel was left in there at the 0-mile mark, but it's at least 2-gallons or more. I think Toyota made the read out pretty conservative.

That being the case, like @ElectroBoy said about tank sludge, probably not the best to push it to the bottom of the tank on a regular basis. Although gas is pretty clean these days and I personally haven't heard of anyone sucking sludge in the last 10 years or so. YMMV of course.

I tend to be like Kramer in that Seinfeld episode, but only if gas stations are close. I sometimes fill my tank all the way up to the filler cap, also, usually on road trips. I have put in more than the 23 gallon capacity many times.
I had a 2010 Tundra and went over 20 miles after the range read Zero on one occasion. I was also pulling a 6x12 trailer at the time. I can't remember how much that tank held, but seem to remember calculating having about 1 1/2 gallons left after I filled the tank. I wasn't to worried as I had a full five gallon gas can in the trailer.
