5 tire rotation and tpms / valve stems
From what I’ve read the ecu only recognizes four tpms sensors?
If so what aftermarket valve stems do you five wheel rotation people run?
I was thinking about just running simple rubber ones from now on, putting a sticker over the light, and calling it a day.
All my old race cars did just fine without the system.

I've got 5, all with TPMS. Just picked up #5 a few months ago (thanks agin ryguytheman)
Haven't rotated in #5 yet, when it's time I'll look up the relearn procedure.
I've also thought about going without.....as so many do.

Interesting... I think you need tech stream and all that jaz. Are you talking about having to plug it in every rotation to relearn?

I have a 2020 Limited and it has 5 TPMS and displays all 5 pressures on the dash. After doing some research, the 5th TPMS seems to be only available on the Limited models.

Yeah I use a scanguage to monitor pressures via the obd port. Only gives me 4. Spare looks like a normal rubber valve stem.
I’m going to be mounting my 5th wheel on my bumper so that would be an issue if I had a limited.
Live readout is nice to have but idk if I want to go to discount tire every time I rotate my wheels. Programmer setup seems expensive. Rubber valve stems have more give too... Torn.

From the research I’ve done, none of the 5th gens had 5 tpms sensors until the ‘15 or ‘16 Limited. That may have changed with the most current model years though. Right now I have 5 sensors installed on my ‘13 Trail but the system will only allow 4 sensors to be programmed. The fifth sensor field is there but you can’t do anything with it.

Yeah I'm thinking about that option. Just one more step due to technology...
Haven't really started researching, but if the unit is too expensive, my tire guy might be inclined to do it for free....

I used to rotate and change wheel sets seasonally on my Audis, but now I let DT rotate my 5 wheel setup to avoid the TPMS light. I think having a toddler has made me lazy.

Some guy in the local truck group says he rotated five on his orp. I wonder if the orp and the limited share that tech feature.

Really hard to get a straight answer on this. Half the people on other threads I’ve made said it will work others say it won’t and idk who speaking from experience or not.

I don't rotate 5 tires, it hasn't been shown to be vastly cost effective over the life of the tires or the vehicle but YMMV.
My understanding is the T4R has 4 sensors and will only monitor 4 of them, and I know for a FACT my spare doesn't have a sensor, and the guys running and rotating 5 tires are probably just running 4 sensors with the spare in play having none or if they did install a sensor, it's not talking to the truck.
Most Toyota dealers will tell you there either is or isn't a sensor in the spare, my experience with two 4Runners, a 2013 and a 2015 is that there isn't, but seeing how the system is set up it only seems set up to "talk" to 4 tires, so even if you do have a fifth sensor, it's probably going to just talk to 4 of them and ignore one. It's not a very "smart" system to start off with.
This is the most likely theory I have.
Edit: apparently the newer ones *might* have them? Figuring out which might be another story. I'm in the process of getting a 2020 for my daughter, if I do, I'll bleed the spare to see if I can get the TPMS to go all REEEEE.

Discount said my tpms isn’t registering aka dead. Service manager stated the 5th couldn’t be added (grain of salt taken).
He let me get my 5th mounted and balanced with a rubber valve stem no questions asked. Only charged me seven doll hairs.
Looks like I’ll have to use my eyeballs and a mechanical gauge. How ever will I survive.
Shame tho. Seems like an antiquated tpms setup. There should be a reset button too.

That's weird because my 4th gen Limited senses the spare TPMS. Weird how they would go backwards on that.

4runner can recognize 5 TPMS. I had 5 installed and always did 5 tire rotations with no issues. Wish the Tundra had the same capacity.
