another 285 post
Simple are 285's really worth it? Will it give me that much more clearance off-road? I recently lifted my 2017 SR5P and have been running BFG KO2's in the stock 265's. Ive been all over Colorado and now starting to roam around Arizona with no problems. However, the time is nearing for a new set of tires.

I drove 15k miles on 265 wildpeaks and they pretty much got me through all the moderate trails I wanted to check out. Changed over to 285 MT01s as I found a good deal on them. Clearance wasn't really that much different (1/2 an inch at best) but the ride comfort over obstacles was much better! Don't think I'll be going back to 265 anytime soon. Will eventually go for 285/75s.

Depends how much you wheel and place value on the trucks ability to do it comfortably.

Well if you get a 2 or 3 inch lift the 265's look out of place. I think without a lift just keep the 265's, if you get a lift put 275's or 285's. It does give you a little bit better ground clearance but they make a big difference going over bigger obstacles. 275's will require no trimming of the fender liner and the speedometer is spot on. 285's will require some fender liner trimming and the speedometer will show 1 mph slower than you really are going.

I agree if your lifting you need something bigger than 265's from an appearance standpoint.
From a performance/function standpoint you'll get better air down characteristics from a bigger tire. Consider air down could loose you an inch ish of clearance.
If it was me I'd look at 255/80 tires as they're a bit narrower and potentially easier to fit. As well the rolling resistance and weight would be a bit less.

That's what did it for me.
The add'l clearance is only 14mm ( (285-265)x0.7=14 ). Every little bit helps, but it is not a big increase. I figure it was offset by my skids.
Besides aesthetics, you will also notice a hit in acceleration and mpg.
That being said, I would not go back to 265's.
I considered the 255/80 option, but afternarket wheels were all too wide for that tire for my taste. IDK why we can't get aluminum wheels with 0 or -12 offset in less than 8.5" width.

I have 285s for my summer set up and 265s for my winter set up.
The 265s look super anemic to the point where I want to change out the winter set up entirely. I'm struggling with this point because I have replica TRD rims which are 8" wide. I could throw 285s on there and call it a day, but I reaaaaaaaaaally want a set of those 9" wide SCS F5s with the -38 offset. But doing that will cost about $3000 to replace a winter tire setup that I have that works. So, purely cosmetic. I could recoup probably $1000 for my current set up so net damage will be $2000.
I just staring at an anemic setup every day wishing I had a better looking set up.
To address the OP, if you go 285, keep in mind that might open up the doors to some rubbing -more so with suspension travel. So, you might have to shave the bumper a touch or even get a body mount chop. That's the only downfalls to 285s.

I have a stock 2020 ORP that came with 265 Bridgestone Duellers. Thinking of moving to BF Goodrich 275/70/17 KO2 and a 2" lift/leveling

Bigger tire is the ultimate way to give more clearance since it is lifting everything.
The con of 285 is it requires modifications for proper clearance and saps power and gas mileage.
If you are happy with 265 off-roading then maybe just go 275 since it is a small bump in size with minimal cons.
Edit: I ran 285 with stock suspension for awhile. Yeah it looks a bit funny but no reason why you cannot assuming you modify properly for clearance.

I've 285 Nittos Terra without any clearance or MPG issues. It's totally doable and worth it because it rides smooth while @ 32 psi (P tire).

I'll just chime in with one other option and some thoughts. There are some very large LT265/70R17 tires out there (the Yokohama I run is a true 32" OD tire and the LT Falken AT3W is at 31.9 inches).
If you look at the 275/70R17 BF-G, you're at 32.2 inches and the 285/70R17 that everyone loves is 32.8 inches. Certain manufacturers including BF-G run smaller I believe than reported also while some like Falken typically run slightly over-sized.
In most cases the extra 0.5 inch of clearance you'll get from a nominally larger 33 inch tire is not going to be make and break versus a ~32.
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with doing a 33 per-say. Just not all 33s are created equal by any means. When I stepped up from my P-rated Terra Grapplers that came on my Pro to the Yokohama's, the visual difference was noticeable with the slightly larger tire and more so, the deeper tread.
I actually think the biggest visual difference from a 285 usually is related to the width and overall track width, not the height. When folks go to aftermarket wheels also, the offset difference often is doing it as much as the tire.
Most rubbing problems on 4Runners are more related to width also keep in mind, why running a 255/80R17 with no mods may be possible (and those tires are usually in the 33.3 to 33.5 inch diameter range). For clearance alone without rubbing problems, nothing probably beats a pizza cutter (if you don't mind the narrow tire look).
