I wasn't aware this was an issue with the 5th generation.
Neither did I… and not just for 5th gen 4runner but for any Toyota.
I am guessing OP had a Ford Truck before… and I have heard that Ford managed to create an issue with capped lug nuts…

Jeep Wranglers also have the capped lugs. Many personal nightmare experiences with them on two different ones. I ended up buying a full new non-capped sets but should have done it the minute I took ownership.

No surprise there… And I am sure for many Jeep “nuts” issue with lug nuts is just another “it is a jeep thing… you wouldn’t understand”…

My issues with the cap lugged nuts is its neither a 21mm or 22mm socket! So chances are if you go to Discount or a tire shop for a flat/patch/plug they just ruin them over time.
Protip: Just swap them out for Dorman replacements.
Also, 4Runner lug nuts aren't as long and I haven't run in to the problems I associate with my Ford lugs nuts with
